The idea of searching through the keelboat section might fill Laser4000 with horror, but the people who use it might be tempted to label Laser4000's comments as as a little arrogant, at least...

I sail both dinghies and keelboats and read topics from both forums. It doesn't take much to conclude that the keelboat forum posters tend to use their forum in a different way; fewer topics/ posts, but posts tend to be longer and less 'chat'. This is observation not criticism, and perhaps it has more to do with demographics than the possibility that no-one sailing keelboats does anything interesting in their lives?

The keelboat section is important to its users; if you want to clean up something, go tidy your room!

There was a good reason I moved the America's Cup fiasco thread to the 'Keelboat News' forum - it is 'Keelboat News'. Then again, maybe it isn't if the next America's Cup is held in multihulls!

I am in no way pigeonholing sailors, but dinghy sailors may by all means post in a keelboat news thread (or any other for that matter). Surely by not touching a thread in another forum you are pigeonholing yourself?

Also if you want to see the active topics please take Stefan's good advice.

A while ago I posted with a suggestion that the number of forums was reduced - did we really need a separate forums for 'holidays',  "boat shows" , "how old is your boat" etc.. my view (and it was shared by some - but definately not all) is that you create a stronger community by having less 'forums' but more posts...indeed if you look at the stats on the forum home page you have more posts in 'dinghy development' & 'choosing a boat' (which was under dinghy development before moved out')  than all the other forums put together..

So I'm was quite interested in getting some discussion going on the americas cup fiasco and what it means to us as whilst it is a it does give ben & perce more time on fhe 5-ring circus which has to be good. so I posted this message in 'dinghy development'

We get some interesting traffic and 10 minutes later the post is moved into the 'twillight zone' of 'keelboat news' which in the WHOLE OF THE LAST YEAR HAS HAD SIX OTHER TOPICS...

Surely dinghy/cat/windsurfers/holidaymakers are entitled to go post stuff that they see may be of 'general interest' withouth having to search through each and every forum to find a thread of interest?.

Surely we as a 'community' would be better served with a 'general forum' which is highly active and perhaps becomes where people go to on the Y&Y site, as it's where the latest news/comment etc is posted. Are sailors so 'pigeon-holed' by our leading magazine that a dighy sailor cannot be interested and have comments on keelboat news and vice/versa - do keelboat sailors never go on a  minorca/wildwind/sunsail/nielsen holiday nor insure their boats?

to provide some stats to my point - topics within the last year from some of the other forums: -

Troubleshooting Corner   -   4
Keelboat Development    -  45
Keelboat News               - 6
AC                                 - 18
Weather                        - 7
Holidays                        - 16
Race Management          - 10
Rules                             - 23
Insurance                        - 6

I can't say any of these forums are active another to warant the server space (IMHO!)

Oh well if you're not going to change I'll leave you to it.. ..
