you can use diffrent tapes they are good on diffrent materials. my parents make spinnikers and we use captin tape from bainbridge. this is good for non silicon coated materials like the airex range. however if the material has a silcon coating something like basting tape would be better

I got fed up with the Tape falling off so I stitched them on. Untwisted and seperated the threads of whipping twin to give me a fine thread and cross stiched them on. Round corners on the patches. Although I might give the silicone sealant a go next time.......I don't know how to use an iron though

The trick with spinny tape is to iron it on - not too hot though - just so that you can touch the bottom of the iron without burning yourself - so that the glue from the tape goes into the weave of the cloth. If you do it right it will *never* come off - which might be a problem if you want to get it repaired properly!

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Spinnaker repair tape often doesn't stick because the sail is coated with silicone. A neat tip that I picked up from Lester Noble that apparently came from the 49er fleet is to use silicone sealant! It works - honest. It's unnafected by the silicone coating. I've used it several times now and it's been 100% successful. Also passed the tip on to several others who now swear by this method. Use the clear version, and smear it as thinly as possible onto the sticky side of spinnaker repair tape (fingers work best). Make sure you have 100% coverage, then place over the hole / tear etc. It takes about an hour to dry, but once set sticks like s**t to a blanket. It's also very flexible and so hardly affects the shape at all. Word of warning - don't get any on furniture, carpets, cloths etc - your mum won't like that! Edited by Hector |
