It was a most unsatisfactory job! Next time I am leaving it to "the professionals"!! I have wrinkles, scratches and a gel coat with stripes (my new stuff wasn't the same colour as my orriginal boat).Polishing with t-cut didn't get rid of the fine sand paper marks, and when I tried to be clever and use my Black and Decker Mouse to polish it in I only suceeded in spraying myself and the wall with t-cut. I have given up, turned the boat the right way up and refuse to think about it. This was ok until I was sailing like a pudding in light wind on Saturday and I started to wonder - was it the scratches and wrinkles.........
I don't suffer from insanity...I enjoy every moment of it.

Cling film is good if you need to shape the gelcoat at all.

At the risk of sounding stoopid - does it work sticky side down, like you'd normally use it (for sticking parcels, not er, anything else...), or do you mean using it 'upside down'....

The curing of Polyester Gelcoat is aerobicly inhibited, the suface won't set unless covered with film to keep the air out as ColH suggested,. This should only effect the surface unless the gelcoat is applied very thin (less than .5mm approx)  and then non of it sets unless covered.

Thats interesting. We've only found this a problem with old gelcoat that we've had over about 6 months and is starting to lose it's styrene content. Mix in some styrene and it's usually ok again, but that's a tip worth remembering.

I think the gelcoat in most peoples toolboxs will be over 6 months old (mine is). There is a "surface wax" additive for eliminating  surface tackiness.The tackiness is useful if applying multiple layers as it helps the layers to bond. The top coat needs to be covered to keep the air out.
