Glenn

A number of options exist for PDA type products. Ockam Eye is one, PocketExpedition is another. Both require the 'Master' program (OckamSoft4 or Expedition) to be running on a WiFi enabled PC.

Both are available for download and review from www.OckamEurope.com.

Bulletproofing your PDA can be achieved in a number of ways, including http://www.psalmgear.co.uk/armorindex.htm.

thanks all, am starting to get a handle on system requirments etc.

what about the 'ockam eye'. it seems to be a cheaper option than the others. i tryied checking on their website however i found their site primative and uninformative. any feedback on it.

Its horses for courses really.

The Panasonic was a great bit of kit. But the transmissive dispays available now really are a compromise and you need the backlight on all the time in bright sunshine which has a big impact on battery life (1-2hrs max). They are however light, durable, sort of waterproof and replaceable.

RaceVision 2 is heavier and much more expensive. However outside the USA it has been relatively successful. Since it is a  Tablet PC in its own right, its response and graphics capability is far superior to the Panasonic. This is particularly noticable when zooming or panning charts. A second benefit is that it effectively becomes the boat PC. At the end of the day you can carry it up to the crew house and do all your post race analysis there and then. It can also dock at the chart table with a keyboard and mouse. Finally the on deck charging and bluetooth connectivity mean that you might never need to go below - you can even surf the web via your bluetooth phone. It comes pre-installled with Deckman for Windows and the transflective screen means no backlight needed during the day and hence around 4hrs battery life.

Glenn

Just talked to a Panasonic salesman and apparently all the bits for the transflective screens are sitting in a warehouse in Japan, just need an order of a 1,000 for them to put them into manufacturing.

Appears that it was ahead of its time and the up take was slow from industry so they shelved it until the market was ready. Or London underground or such like put in an order.

They proved popular with Tesco's and the Honda F1 team where they wanted the power of a laptop computer outside but didn't want the hassle or weight.

There was the other rumour about the factory in Taiwan that made the transflective displays burnt down, but i live in hope and think i believe the first one more as it cam directly from someone who sells them for Panasonic.

Haggis, you are mis-informed.

Expedition has a feature whereby you load tidal models (supplied with the software) that deliver tidal streams based on reference ports all over the world. The English channel is very well covered for obvious reasons.

This tidal data is also avialable to view heights and times at these reference ports.

On top of this, grib management is supplied as standard, therefore current gribs can be edited, played and used for routeing. Also, you can create grib files from your logged data.

Overall, probably the most complete management of tidal/current data available in any software.

I am slightly biased but if you are UK based give Mark Day at Marine Computing a call 02380458047 md@marinecomputing.com

Marine Computing are one of the UK retailers for the Panasonic Screens and accessories.

They also can supply advice and equipment required aswell as distribute a wide variety of software packages Deckman and SeaTrack included

am still considering the purchase of a tactical software package.

there seems to me to be 3 main players out there

  • B&G
  • Ockam
  • Panasonic

I contacted a specialist in the States and this is what he had to say>>only one (1) Racevision 2 (tablet version) has been sold in the US. In the same time period we sold over 175 Panasonic MDWD displays here and abroad. Most Farr 40's, TP52's and other boats are using the MDWD, the form is so compact it's almost "wearable".Pyewacket, Morning Glory and Genuine Risk each have two. Only issue is that the transflective version is no longer produced so only the high  bright is now available. This is a "thin client" device so you need to run a computerbelow, usually a small laptop for your size boat.
> See:  http://www.panasonic.com/computer/toughbook/learn_more_tb07. asp
> Costs are as follows:
> MDWD Display $1,928
> Spare battery $170
> 3-Bay Charger $349
> Fabric case with neck strap $100
> 12VDC power adapter $65
> USB wireless NIC $125
> Deckman for Windows $1,495

Buy two and you're still way ahead of the game! The tablet the
Racevision is based on is about $5,000, but do you really want a heavy,  expensive tablet hanging around your neck that takes your tactical information with  it when its goes overboard? Loose the MDWD and you still have the laptop  running the software below.  <<<<

Do people have an opion about this stuff??

Toni Lopera Mallorca Spain, is one of the best in B&G navigating systems. Contact him by (http://www.dahlberg-sa.com) Hi give me this message: To install Race Vision you need a Performance Processor. Hi think Race Vision is OK, as you have “free hands” no running cables on deck. You need to be familiar with a program called “DECKMAN” or “DECKMAN FOR WINDOWS”. Toni can help you.

Does any body know much about electronics.  we have B&G Hercules racing system.

display include:

true wind speed @ angle

apparent wind & angle

boat speed

heading

depth

GPS

we are thinking about getting race vision.  does anybody have any advice on this product or other reccomemded products. is there a supior product out there.  What dont you get with race vision that might be a hidden extra.  i have seen the Ockam wind ploter. is there a simular display with race vision.

all advice welcome. its rather a lot of money to make a mistake with. we have someone going to the USA in a week or so.  is there a potential saving by buying in the US.
