I had a problem with a mast -the spreader adjuster tang had pulled out leaving oversize holes. Following reccomendations from the local dinghy supplier : thoroughly cleaned and sanded the area to be repaired cut a piece of glass tape the shape of the tang base taped round the area to prevent overruns covered the two holes and the area covered by the tang with "Chemical Metal", saturated the glass tape with the same stuff and stuck it on to the mast covered the tang base with a fine layer of "Chemical Metal, placed it on the glass tape and fixed the whole lot down with masking tape. When everything had set hard I drilled holes through the repaired mast and pop riveted the tang fitting to the mast - covering the rivets in a dollop of fresh "Chemical Metal" A small overspill of the mixture proved impossible to remove from the mast and had to be ground off. This might only be a temporary repair but it looks and feels pretty solid.

Drilling a small hole in the end of the crack should stop it progressing further

well there goes my plan of fibreglass and epoxy (or carbon). your rivet a plate on idea sounds like reasonable one, although would the extra holes weaken the mast more than the plate would strengthen it?

Whilst cleaning my new play thing I noticed the mast has a crack in it about 3/4 and inch long where the shrouds joint the mast. Is there a temporary repair that can be done so I can us it whilst sourcing another. I was thinking of rivetting a plate down that side of the mast to reinforce it? Any views?????? |
