unfortunatly for you, high spec blocks are very expensive, and the gain, even with ratchet blocks is minimal. In the long run i'd suggest upgrading your girlfriend to a heavier duty model!

I would definately say cleats but also worth fitting barber haulers or track so you can adjust the sheet angle for the conditions. Also what diameter sheet, larger diameter is easier to grip and hence pull-in but you might need two sets depending on wind speed.

You could also try achieving 2:1 purchase on the jib sheets, although this type of system might result in too much rope in the cockpit.

I agree its just a case of finding the cheapest high quality blocks for the job.  Can anyone advise me on what they found was the cheapest place to by stuff.  The cheapest one I have fouind so far was Northampton Sailboats the delivered the next day and tell you what they have in stock with a green light on the web site.

You definitely want cleats.  Mark the sheets with the optimum position with felt tip pen. Tack, cleat, sit out and draw the sheets into the optimum, then sail by your jib tell-tales, play the main for power.  Its very difficult to sail to windward well with the jib sheet angle changing, cleats keep it constant.

Since when was an Applecore one-design? As far as I remember, rigging and control systems are free. Still not sure a self-tacker would work. Isn't the jib foot a bit long?

We had standard blocks on the Fireball with cleats on ramps in front of them. We found that by leading them down we could get jib car adjustment too (through judicious use of string and shockcord).

Make sure the cleats are mounted right so it is easy to get the rope in and out though. Nothing worse than struggling to get the rope cleated (and even worse to get it uncleated).

They are on auto ratchets but are still not enough to help her out.  I think having them on through deck blocks with cleats just in front of them is the best way to go that way she can cleat them off as soon as we tack and its all good then
