Yup, 50 off a 50 inflated price every year is exactly the same as it was before. But instead of calling it an extra penalty fee for new members it's a discount for timely renewals. I don't think joining fees are a bad thing to help retain members and keep them paying subs on time. But they do come across as a penalty to entrants which isn't really the point.

Sub plus joining fee is less than most club's annual subs. Mine is around £230 at present and, AFAIK, even the cheapest clubs around here have subs that are well over £100.

Indeed, how dare people try new things when they are not already 100% sure in advance that they will like it... ![]() |

That’s £50 every year though, rather than a one off £50? |

The main justification for joining fees is that's it's a penalty that can be used with people who fail to renew when they should and then turn up 6 months later expecting to be able to pay the basic rate. So you can say, sorry you're no longer a member you need to rejoin, that'll be £50 please.
A better solution is probably to do a modified version of mossy's idea, and give a discount to those who renew on time, and not to those who renew late.

I suspect that joining fees belong to today much like black balling did, to a time when clubs were elusive and exclusive. The only valid reason for retaining them is possibly that the additional investment is a disincentive for not renewing ... however £ 50 compared with the typical club annual subscription is neither here nor there.
