The Laser 4.7 champ sailed, and managed a 6th in one race......

True, most are still Laser 2000s, which wouldn't sit well with the sponsor.

There's the challenge of finding decent 2000s for everyone to race though. Probably a lot easier to find a well maintained 200.

I'd have thought the 2000 would be a good compromise. Raced competitively, so a "real" boat, but with a more general, less quirky skillset, and wide weight range. Bet on the same winner, though.

Well as defending champion, I guess he can make time! Plus he has sailed 200s in the past, so he hardly needs much practice beforehand. |

I didn't feel disadvantaged this year from my weight at 90 kilos as my combination with light crew was ok.
I was not however able to hike as hard and long as others having not sailed hiking boats for 25 years. You wouldn't expect to cycle up a hill as fast as someone that rides every week! I know there is no solution to this and thoroughly enjoyed the sailing and hospitality from RCYC. I also really enjoyed sailing the 200 on the Sunday in a breeze which was so light my current boats aren't much fun in. I wasn't very good but maybe next.... |

The winner of the laser nationals tend to be pro's, so I guess they've got better places to be than the Crouch! |

Having sailed both the 4 and the 2, I think the 4 is the far easier boat to sail, much more stable in any breeze. Also, national winning crew weights in the 4 in the last three years range from 124kg to 160+, so the lightweights aren't that disadvantaged!
I'd also make the point that a light helm can find a big crew to sail the bigger boat. Someone who might win a nationals in one of the heavyweight classes ie; phantom /finn, are always going to struggle to find a crew small enough to be competitive. As it's Rs providing the sponsorship at the moment, I guess there's not too much choice beyond those, unless it returns to the rotomoulds. RS Vision? |
