The spreadsheet numbers are tight, but only those racing someone in the same class would have had any idea how close on the water.

A fortnight ago we were beaten for a minute by another boat (different class). Same boat the next week we beat by a minute or so. Another week we may be almost identical on time. I think it's telling us more about which way the tide was going and how much wind there was than our performance.

Still, it's boats out sailing, i think that's the best result.

We had some 200 sprint racing at the RS reunion regatta. I think 10 boats or so over 15-20 minutes races and I don't think the fleet was ever separated by more than 30 seconds at the finish. The greatest thing being you were actively racing the other boats for the full 15 minutes, knowing exactly how your decisions were effecting your position without having to come ashore before finding out how close it was.

We seem to have a local handicap system on trial. Trouble is that only our little club submit. I have no idea how this works but it just gave me two second places (behind someone even older than me) and well ahead of my very successful son. Much amusement.

And clinker built too...

Actually it would be unusual to have so many finishers so close together in a club class race as typically you will cover the boat behind which will drop him back at least 15-20 seconds.
