And one day some time in the future when your job has f**ked you off, your kids have p1ssed off (not thanking you at all by the way) and other people haven't been quite as serious about paying you as you have them, you'll come to realise racing sailing craft(s) is the only thing in life worth taking seriously.

I take my sailing very seriously. Every time I step in the boat I'm in a competition either against myself or the other boats, so fleet race or handicap doesn't matter, I'm competitive and I want to win regardless. I enjoy handicap racing and the fact that some days its easy due to favourable conditions for my boat while on other days its a really big challenge. I like the occasional fleet race at opens to really test my metal. To say one is unimportant or has little significance is I think wrong, they are just different challenges.

Rugby world cup in 95 was of sporting, and cultural and political significance. Olympic sailing, not so much. However, that doesn't mean it isn't important to those who care, just as wth club racing.

I totally separate my daily life, politics and religion etc from my sporting life.
I take this separation seriously.

I take my work seriously, I take looking after my children seriously, I take paying my bills seriously  - I can not take mucking about in boats at the weekend seriously.  Why would you?

I would be quite interested to know what Jim's definition of "sporting significance" is?

So, I take my racing fairly seriously, whether it be classics, club handicap or class racing. I used to take it far more seriously, and judge my sailing by my results. Now, I don't. I judge it upon whether I have, in my opinion, sailed as well as I could have. I judge it on whether I have actually enjoyed the experience. I judge it on whether at any point toys were thrown out of pram. I now get worse results, but had I continued judging things by how I did against others, in the way I did before, I doubt I'd still be sailing.

But getting a win is always a good feeling, even if tinged with a slight feeling of undeservedness, and a loss is always a bit depressing, especially if I could have sailed better,so maybe I've not really changed all that much!
