Hey yes that's me! I've just ( almost ) retired, and have recently got a 22 footer for daysailing, short trips and overnights, on my own or with my wife. Just about sitting headroom, setup for s/h sailing. I went to the boatshow, and there were only Cornish Crabbers, and a Saffier 8m that is like a modern Folkboat, but all at 25 x what I spent on a good condition old boat with a full new set of mylar sails. Got some cheap waterproofs though ;-) Edited by I luv Wight - 22 Sep 17 at 7:15pm |

I think you are semi correct Jim.
Undoubtedly the super wealthy are getting wealthier and so the large motorboat marques are pandering to this. However I don't believe the point regarding the rest of society having less spare cash. I think larger societal issues are at play. If we look at typical ownership of 20-30ft sailing yachts then they are normally owned by men of a certain age! These gents historically went for small trips around our coastline often singlehanded or with a few friends, but rarely with wife and children in tow. Society is currently demanding that men in particular no longer ditch their family on the weekends to enjoy a past-time on their own, therefore those looking for a sailing yacht now have to ensure that the whole family will be comfortable in said purchase. That normally requires full standing headroom, a fridge, 3 separate bedrooms, a shower and a 4 burner stove and oven which typically doesn't fit in your average 20-30ft cruiser. As a result we are seeing more sales in the 36-50ft range. I dare say charter companies are helping with this, as when you go on your 2wk flotilla holiday in the med to see if the family will enjoy yacht ownership you're hardly likely to be given a Beneteau 211, Sun2000 or Sadler 25, it'll be a Hanse 400 or a Sun Odyssey 37 or larger. No other shop window for the dinghy world is going to approach Sailboat, and I suggest relatively few people would go to Soton who wouldn't go to Crystal Palace, so the paucity of dinghy vendors is unsurprising. But the loss of sailboats in the moderate sizes is disturbing. I suppose it reflects society in that the executive class is rewarding themselves with huge incomes, and the rest of society has less and less spare cash.

My partner works for the company that makes all the upholstery, furnishings etc for Oyster yachts so had a vested interested in perusing the rather beautiful Oysters on show. Dreamworld. She has a great job going on board measuring up etc

I went to the Boat Show last Saturday, seeing as I live in Southampton .....
As mentioned, only really RS and Hartley for dinghies. The Osprey on the Hartley stand looked fab - loads of string to pull and get tripped over - and amazing value for money boat really. What is clear from the last 2 years I also went, to when I last visited in the 80's and 90's is how Boating has changed. Dinghies used to have their own park area, now they dont. Sailing yachts in the 20ft - 36ft range have almost disappeared now with huge focus on the bigger ones i.e unaffordable to most people. Motor boats dominate the entire show today. The marquee was empty where all the engine pieces and accessories were (not surprised really). Its nice to go for locals like me to get some fresh air and take in some boatey stuff, but can appreciate that if you are a dinghy sailor and live a distance away, there is little to draw you in. As for MM - have read her name a few times but dont take notice of all that minor celeb stuff. Hardly the right person to open the show .....

This thread has left me feeling completely out of touch!
WTF is a "Lifestyle Entrepreneur" (which she apparently is)? And what has her ex got to do with ropes - is there real any reason why we should be interested in either of them?

So you've witnessed the delights of the M20, it used to be an easy stretch, before they dug that hole in the ground and let in the French, then the rest of Europekind, wearing the road out paying nothing towards the upkeep, we should have instituted an Austrian style 'Vignette' toll, an inordinate amount of Traffic wearing away the surface of the M20 comes from overseas, then half of it crosses the Dartford crossing and doesn't pay there either.
