Thanks so much all for the advice. Simon, I have it on good authority that this is actually the boat you took to the Olympics!

There are any number of reasons it can be too tight, there are plenty of foils around where the thickness has changed over the years for instance, or sometimes they are packed badly or with just not enough tolerance. All the previous suggestions work. It is such a bad end and beginning to a good days sailing that its just worth cutting the packing out and starting again. Webbing and contact adhesive work very well. If your really in to the performance then sika flex or foil sealer to seal the bottom. But I would imagine just cut it out and start again will solve the issues! Good luck.

Use loads of McLube. A lot of 49ers have had the cassettes packed out to prevent any movement but getting the foils in and out becomes tricky.

I genreally have to jerk the top of the dagger board forwards, towards the mast, before it will come up.  I also had to trim the gasket material a little, using a modelling knife/scalpel, to make things a bit easier.
No idea about any tricks for the rudder - I don't do that - other than trimming the gaskets.

Hi all,
I'm having problems with the rudder and centreboard on a 49er getting stuck in their respective cases. I had the boat out for a sail yesterday and the only way to get both out was to capsize the boat and knock the foils out with a mallet. Suggestions?
