I use a Suunto Ambit - its waterproof durable and ideal for sailing (and it shows speed while sailing - here's a confusing track from yesterday's Frostbite at Alton Water) I like the link into Strava for cycling and running when on dry land too. http://www.movescount.com/moves/move141430714

gen 1 apple watch is IPX7 water resistant, i.e. 1 metre for 30 mins but they do say the water resistance will deteriorate with age/use!!!!! the second gen is rather better and apple say "Apple Watch Series 2 has a water resistance rating of 50 meters under ISO standard 22810:2010." |

You need a monitor to tell you to eat when you are hungry? |

You buy a case to make it more so, but if you read the various group discussions there are numerous examples of folk who like me forget they have it on, 1st in the shower, then swimming, windsurfing, kiting, sailing etc and it is still going strong, the term 'resistant' correct me if I'm wrong means down to a depth of 3 mtrs which more than covers what I get up to. |

Think you'll find the higher end wrist based monitors are as good as most chest straps. The issue you have is only very high end monitors are reliable in the water at reading hr

Very much worth monitoring calories burnt, if not for training then for event management. Those who think you don't burn many might be surprised to know that according to heart rate monitors that I have used in the past, a 20 knot day in a Laser which can last up to 8 hours on the water in some cases can burn about 6-700 calories an hour, if not more. That's a serious amount of food that needs to be consumed if you are going to be fighting fit for the next day.
It really needs to be a proper chest mounted monitor to actually give meaningful data. The laser based through wrist monitors are really pretty bad at measuring your actual heart rate accurately. Polar have always been the market leaders for this and do a lot of waterproof kit.

Apple Watch is "water-resistant" not "waterproof". https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT205000

Apple watch has such an app, unfortunately it doesn't have a decent app to time the start sequence and certainly nothing that can be used with sailing gloves, but it can monitor heart rate and calories burned.
