I don't believe you need the lee spreader to do anything... Laterally its opposing the windward spreader, so of no value, and the fore and aft effect is identical to the windward spreader. To my mind you just need the mast step and tube to resist torsional loads. So I reckon rig tension merely needs to be sufficient to keep jib luff sag under control. Even torsion doesn't seem to be that big a deal. I don't have a tenon in the (very unconventional) mast 'step' on my IC, and the mast doesn't move. Edited by JimC - 13 Jun 16 at 9:20am |

Which does reinforce the suggestion from the Farr3.7 thread of an unstayed rig a la D1 that normal weight folk (under 80kgs) could trap from. |

Many classes seem to run as high a rig pre-load as the hull will stand. With a plank, you need a lot of pre-load to avoid the lee shroud going slack and hence the lee spreader doing nothing. As you say, the 'conventional' 3 wires and 2 spreaders is not the only or ideal solution. I think in the days of planky Hornets, diamonds and so forth were not unknown, but then they used to appear on 5-0's in those days. There are few like-for-like comparisons. You could say conceptually, the ultimate trapeze rig is a board with harness. Rig tension not required, shrouds not required..... |

Anyone else remember the Delta? Trap singlehander with unstayed mast. Saw it at the Dinghy show long ago, have seen the odd one for sale, but I suspect it was a boat that would have worked if kept more traditional, like the small Contender some seem to want!

Its a lot more complicated than that... For example, because the trapeze unloads the shrouds, most trapeze boats run a great deal of static rig tension in order to keep the spreaders working. A major point of the sometimes decried diamonds on the RS600 is that the mast support is independent of shroud tension, so there is no need to run very high rig tension to support the mast with that rig setup. But in most cases a boat with trapezes requires higher static tension than boats with wings or sliding seats. Edited by JimC - 12 Jun 16 at 7:16pm |

Equally compression is a function of righting moment as well as the angles that the shrouds subtend.
