The rig would benefit from a carbon mast and particularly a carbon boom as its long and its weight works against it at times. However, its one of the most useable dinghy rigs I have sailed. it works in anything from a drifter to 25 knots with just one sail size......... I found the open meetings to be very friendly and loved it. I only changed because we have a 20 boat aero fleet and I wanted a boat with less kneeling. Well the first point is acheived.

The problem with the rig is that if they change it too much the boat will become something completely different. The sail has had sever iterations from several different makers over the years but these are more of a refinement than evolution. There was a lot of discussion within the class when Hartleys dictated the weight change but, to their credit, they then offered a competitively priced upgrade program for current boat owners. they have also improved the over all build quality. There was a guy at my local club had 2 or 3 hulls from the previous builder before he got one that didn't have any issues.

Because I guess it's gentle evolution rather than a big bang effect. As an outsider I got the distinct impression that the Class were not wholly behind the hull changes Hartley's made a few years back. They seemed to have got over it now so who knows what the future might hold for the rig? I think that doing the whole thing in a oner might have been a step too far for the majority. |

Even worse for you grf, they can build them light and they do, then they add more metal...

They're not "Folks' they're Finn Sailors, time travellers from an era long past and overweight due to the massive consumption required to travel this far through time. They are also 'confused' being this far in the future where no-one understands why a boat that they struggle to build really light has a big chunk of flat metal in the middle with absolutely no lift derived from its chunky flatness.

500 or so Finns on an Italian Lake somewhere.... the D Fantastica will probably take most of the top 10 slots, and the rigs are nicely updated too. But they ain't light, and they ain't manageable... so looks like 'Folks' like diversity ;-)

It's proof that folk want light and manageable single handed boats, but they also want better rigs than currently available on some light boats, that sail hasn't been updated since the dark ages, why uprate the body without uprating the engine?

That patch at the top of the sail is only on one side so the sail looks different tack to tack. I find the lack of symmetry annoying.
