i think it would be great for y&y to do an article on boat building. it might incourage people to build newer boats or maybe even design some completely different classes. failing this it would certainly be interesting and would definetly help with maintenance.

If anyones thinking of building, they could make the important choices, like budget, and what class... then ask this forum. I don't doubt there are many experienced builders lurking around here.

The myth of having to spend vast amounts on money to remain in a development fleet is on the whole totaly unfounded. There is a bit of an arms race in the 14s which seemed to kick off when they hit the US big time but with the cherubs, and to an extent the moths and a number of other classes the spirit of the class survives and home building and inovation is encouraged which means they can be surprisingly cheep to run. Plans can be bought from http://www.bloodaxeboats.co.uk and a number of moulds are available if you speak to the designers |

maybe not a forum but an interview may be.or any outher boat builders out there. p.s not to go off the subject completely but what is the sudden obsession with cheubs l8ly. i have never had a go of one so i cnt comment too much but it seems like alot of money. if i knew how to build one i would probibly give it a go. how much do plans for one cost anyway. they look fun but with it being a total development class it would mean constantly adjusting things to keep competative. oh byt the way would any other boat builder care to maybe join in with this article

He's on a deadline to build a new Cherub for next season. So he's probably not got much time for forums. ![]() |

Hardest part is always getting started - once you have basic principles
down you can make anything with a bit of creativity! Ask some builders
for some advice, most I know are pretty helpfull when getting started,
even better if you are buying bits from them aswell to help grease the
wheels (no thats not a shameless plug.)
Nice to think the Aardvark thing is almost fame... |

im sure iv got a book on boat tuning by him and he mentions supercharging alot. any way. it would be a good idea for a wider variety than just hulls. but i think it would be good to see how a home built boat should be.

Rodney Pattison did a fantastic article about 20 years ago called 'Supercharging' (I still have a photocopy of it) which was about bringing an older dinghy (FD in this case) up to speed. It was especialy helpful to have someone of his calibre saying what was worth spending either time or money on. I guess today the piece would be written by a boatbuilder and I don't think it would have the same appeal but it would still be interesting. |
