The 'conventional' deck/hull join is arguably not as 'pretty' etc to some eyes but it does at least give a really decent foot/hand hold when the boat is not 'mast to sky'... and it certainly will not be upright for 100% of the time  Wink ....

We have extensively trialed a not-disimilar gunwhale join but you then end up looking at making intentional receses in the hull/deck mouldings (hand and footholds if you like)  to give the hull back the advantages of the older style'rolled-seam' join to regular crews.  So the advantage is not all one way and finishing the 'smooth' join well takes considerably more time.    Rolled/flared joins, as has been said already,  can also help with flying spray as well.   Lastly launching trolleys - they do work rather well with 'conventioanal' rolled joins and provide pretty certain 'engagement'.

You have to be really careful sometimes of putting style before substance .... or at least to make sure you weight up the pro's and con's objectively relative to what you are trying to achieve.  In fact what 'sparrow' and others say really ...

Horrid rig, dangerous lack of hull grab holds and the need for an ugly spray rail. Being a designer in any sphere of business isn't about dogmatically keeping hold of one idea regardless of the consequences. Yuk.

Is that a centreboard or daggerboard or lifting weighted keel on the Sportsyacht? Can't quite make it out from the video or stills.

Looked a bit odd to me when I had a look. In pictures looks like Bruce farr sent him the original Megabyte hull shape and JS then champered the whole thing off to deck level. Not exactly a 'looker ' imho.

I had a bit of a look over them they were next to the food stall and I was stuffing pork crackling into my face at the time so couldn't really talk. They looked a bit, well what can I say, 'not serious' cruisey looking things, a big one and a not so big one, did one have a keel? Anyway they looked like you'd need a crane and a dock, sort of italian lake boats, I could be wrong, I was in such a muddle with the pork crackling which honest to God must be the finest tasting thing known to mankind and they didn't look like race boats in the techy sense.

That and a totally impractical brand name something Forza.

The smooth gunwhale less look is cute, and aerodynamically beneficial, but I do wonder about the practicalities.

Had 2 boats there. Looking for dealers. Smaller was John Swarbrick, larger JS and Bruce Kirby.

A friend of mine went to the Dinghy Show and was telling me about these two new singlehanders. Apparently, the smaller one (looks like a D-Zero to me) was at the show. Not sure whether the Zen Sportsyacht was there, however. Interesting video. See the mast flex on the Sportsyacht at about 1 minute into the video.

Anybody chat to the rep. at the show?
