you are right oldbloke. the first sailing trophy I ever won was as part of the Pilks SC winning Rudyard Cannon team. Dont know if that still runs - sailed in Ents. At pilks we used to team race against WLYC, southport, west Kirby, usually the host club would provide the boats. I suppose that these days with many more classes of boat being sailed within clubs, getting enough reasonable boats in any class would be problematic - my club could probably manage toppers.... |

Really whatever club boat you have is fine: Ents, Wafs, 2Ks, Bosuns, Fevas... Lasers work but they tend to damage quite easily with those stupid thin gunwales. If you and your club were set on "Team racing boats" it's possible to build up a flight of Laser 2's, old Larks or 420s quickly and cheaply from universities and club sin-bins. If you really wanted Fireflies, 6 glass ones start at around £900-1000 per boat or you could pick up 6 wooden ones for a couple of grand all in (There are loads at the £200-£400 mark around in gardens and garages that wouldn't take a massive amount of work to get on the water). |

Many years ago,and possibly what sawman is referring to, there was a number of "own boat" team racing events. Up north there was the Ullswater Twighlight Transom [in November!!], Ripon's Tilcon trophy and one at Derwent Reservoir that I cant remember the name of. I know the 12;s and 14's had similar events. Being in your own boat and not just University teams, it was a lot less bumper cars but still pretty competitive. Also in those days the RYA team racing championship had a
widespread entry of club teams and not just the few hyper-expert teams that contest events nowadays

Last team racing I did was in Bosuns for this reason! It used to be possible to charter a fleet from the Navy? |

My recollection of team racing from a long way back was that it was very much a contact sport and there was a reluctance to use own boats for fear of damage.
Having no recent experience have the post 1996 rules changed the team racing game much, particularly at top levels? |

Do you have any other classes present in the club in those numbers, and could the owners be persuaded to take part, including swapping boats etc? Clearly some boats are more suitable than others, foiling Moths probably not the best choice! But how about RS200s sailed without a kite? GPs, Enterprises, Mirrors, Fevas all spring to mind (again I'd leave the kite off for any of them).

I would like to see if I can get some team racing started at my club sometime in the future.
Apart the challenge of generating enthusiasm, the need to have 6 (or even 4) Fireflys (or similar) presents a high barrier to starting team racing. Does any creative ideas on how to get around this 'chicken and egg' situation of boats and any other comments on getting team racing started? One idea for boats would be to use Lasers to get started; although not a traditional team racing boat, there are lots them around, they are the same and in general people know how to sail them. |

Our club has a bi-annual fixture with another local club for a lovely silver trophy which was originally contested by those two Bath area clubs and one from Alkmaar, Holland to commemorate the twinning of the two towns and the aid from Bath to Alkmaar at the end of the second world war. It is handicap racing rules though rather than team racing but the plan for the next event is an away weekend at a neutral venue somewhat larger than our puddle and ditch. |

My club used to have a 3 cornered event, running for quite a number of years, even had a trophy, home and away, but no more.
However we are in the planning stages of a team race against another club next year, home and away. Handicap though.

We have team racing training every Sunday afternoon at Rutland over the winter.
It's been a very good way of getting members out. We have attracted school sailors, beginners, experienced and a previous world champion to play and coach. Any clubs who want a challenge, let me know. Or look at the Facebook page on Rutland team racing. Andy |
