Nah, I've seen one compete at the 'Battle of the Classes' in Victoria Dock (next to ExCeL). No worries.

Well the A's get 100 boats (limited) at their worlds, with multiple Olympic and AC champs, so no one can say the competitive side of A class sailing is lacking. In my experience they are unbeatable in light winds, and stunningly beautiful. But you need the right location for one.

If you want 15 boat plus opens, 50 plus boat nationals, 60-80 boat plus European worlds venues and cheap running costs then the Musto is the way to go. Ff you have oodles of money and you like travelling to far flung worlds venues and keeping up with the Jones then the A class is for you.

I have seen some A class cats sailing and whilst they do look cool they are rather dull in light winds particularly downwind.

True? (incoming!!)

I've noticed a quite a big improvement in those attending the circuit at least in the last, certainly in conditions gusting up to 20 knots most of the fleet are on it.  things get fruity once you get to a constant 22+ or so though, but that's not really that different from any fast dinghy.

Certainly the guys at the front half of the fleet were still racing, rather than surviving, in gusting 30 knots at last years Inlands... flat water mind you.

the class offer excellent training and encourage newbies along to events routinely (it's the best way to learn the boat).... so yes, those on the early stages of the learning curve do get to do their windy weather capsizes in full view and sympathy from those who've gone before them.

I read Dougal's post as being wind speed threshold, driven at least partly by them not wanting to break expensive, fragile boats.
