Which is why when Sport England do their Active People survey, which they then use to determine funding, those sports come out best and get most.

Unfortunately most sailors rely on clubs bring open safety cover available etc, to be able to get out and train.  Plus of course sailors require daylight which coincides with work hours, so training to sail is pretty difficult to fit in for the mere mortal.  Though not of course, for the Olympians and aspirants who will train year round, day in, day out.
the same, but different...

Whoa there partners  Smile
I'd be shy of drawing comparisons with equestrian disciplines. At the most modest Club style level most horse riders will ride and train seven days a week, some may layoff a month or two but many will be 52 weeks a year. It would be an exceptionally keen club sailor who sailed 52 times a year.
There have been very few one horse wonders at top level and those that have been are more about the length of time it takes both in years and hours per week to reach top level. Not everyone wants to sustain such a commitment.

Perhaps the time spent doing and or training is an interesting topic at Club level. Runners, swimmers and cyclist would I guess (from my training for a one off half marathon) will be doing something at least one day in three.

I think you guys are being quite naive about the amount of training and hard work that goes into a rider horse partnership at even modest levels of dressage competition.

But the horse must have a natural ability, whereas the boat will (and here is a sweeping statement) perform due to the set up on the day by the people sailing it.  You often see riders who only ever succeed In their careers on one horse, or riders who are tipped to medal who have to retire if their horse is lame.  Also the participation costs make dinghy racing seem like small beer.

The horses go up in value every time they win.  If you can afford it you can buy your way to the Games, never seems suite right to me.

I have always wondered why the horses don't get the medals in events like dressage, given that the riders are incapable of medaling if their horse is lame...

Horseracing is often referred to as the sport off kings but the kings never race but leave it to the jockeys and horses.

So is this a sport??
