The retired can be a great resource for a club - sometimes they just need to be asked.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Absolutely- when my nest's empty and my NIs contributed to clearing the national debt of a feckless generation rather than providing for my retirement, I wouldn't mind doing a lot more at a sailing club in return for a cheaper subs, but in the interim it kinda sucks giving up those precious few sessions to sit in a hut filling in a spreadsheet with meaningless times.

Or set yourself up as a contractor. In all seriousness, when I'm too frail to sail I wouldn't mind at all doing race officer many times a year. Nice way to spend the day, even more so if you get some pocket money for it!

I know- I'm not really suggesting through the books employment, more black economy credit. E.g knock £50 off the membership fee for every extra day of duties... Nice retention policy too. If the books don't balance, then I accept the policy might have to be weighted or adjusted differently. Eg 30 quid credit for doing the extra duty, 100 debit for not doing the basic one... 70 net income to club for those gawd awful quiz and karaoke nights.

But you wouldn't be. As a crude rule of thumb it costs roughly twice the net pay to employ someone what with employers contributions to NI, accountants, insurance, all the rest of it.

All very laudable Do Different, but as someone's whose reality is a club membership that is really only about 20 4 hour sessions a year- including the drifters, giving up 20% of that for 2 full day duties is never going to rationally stack up ... Far better to offer a pay and play approach, or to enable time poor folks an opportunity to pay slightly more and to contribute financially.

If paying an extra £100 buys back those two days, and/or reduces the rates for a pensioner or student who has the time to do more race duties, then I can't see the reason for the moral condemnation of a more practical approach.

Pay to play can only work at big clubs. I have no problem with it as an idea, but if applied to all clubs, 95% would fold.
It tends to appeal to rich t**sers who have no interest in club life/ friendships/helping out/fun/ laughter/piss taking and all the other things that make sailing at aclub the joy it is.

It could equally apply to shift workers who find themselves working most weekends.

Very true. I think it's such a good idea now that I think I will now present it to the our club committee next month. Here's my £100 now. I'm sure all of the committee will think paying £100 is a great exchange for not doing duties and I'm sure the remaining members won't mind doing duties every other week, all year round.

And I think all of said committee will be forming a disorderly queue to offer you a finger to swivel on old boy.

So back to my original point. Pay to play can only ever work well at the biggest clubs that have professional rescue. If it means the general membership has to do more duties, i don't think the idea has legs.

Fair enough, the market sets its rate.

I think you'd find there would be cheaper options though, I know if I could have been paid £50 to run some club racing as a student, it would have been far more enticing than folding jumpers in Burtons or stacking the shelf at the CO-OP.
