I suppose that some of this depends on if this vessel is intended as a thing of speed and beauty which will be sailed for the rest of GRF's life then handed on to his grandchildren or a rough mock up to test a theory.

Spotted this over on the National 12 boat database. The designer and builder of the boat featured has given his thoughts on a simplified building process for a proposed new build in wood. No idea if the thinking is new, but it may be worth following up. He seems willing to share ideas.

Bloody heck, there's more to this wood bothering than you first think, someone suggested Canadian Hemlock today, very straight grain, a 'soft' wood to work with but drys out very hard over a period and quite light.

I thought 'oh just knock something up with ply, how difficult could it be?' It's a nightmare just choosing what wood to buy...

Love how quickly they work, and how well invested the process is.
You could do that with vac bags these days - wouldn't need an oven with modern glues. 15psi is enough. You'd need guys who were that quick mind to beat the glue cure!

Dan, years back, some of the Aussie sailors operating out of Brisbane made some superb strip balsa Contenders; they looked superb and were very successful. But you are right in that you really need a 'boaty' shape to make it work.

The quote from 'Jacko' - Alan Jackson. who used to be one of the great innovative merlin rocket builders, "foam is faster"!

I wouldn't advise something with a balsa core for someone with Graeme's philosophy on boat car.
Strip planking is a trad boat method, and whilst it can provide strong lightish results, will mean that you are limited to boaty shapes.
Foam provides a lot more latitude for free form or organic shapes.

In the table Wester Red Cedar looks very bad indeed. If you go to the actual page for WRC in their database, it does say that "severe reactions are uncommon". Still not to be taken too lightly. A good particle filter mask is worth the investment.

I couldn't help noticing that "There have been no adverse health effects associated with Paulownia." Sounding better all the time :)
