Marke,  yep we're on a very tidal estuary, but would say there isnt a correlation to the faster boats within each fleet to have greater movement negatively and the slower boats positively though. ie theyre not spreading out, which is what you'd expect with tidal factors, maybe we have enough racing and equal courses either side of the tide and tide line (as per other discussions about time spent for a fast boat and slow boat punching tide) to balance it out thus rendering it moot?  This is all a theory and would need to crunch the numbers, may be proven wrong yet.

I usually upload all of our clubs series upto the end of the summer series in Sept/Oct. Normally takes me an hour or so for one evening. The only tricky bit is going through PYS and making sure all the class names are written correctly and configs are correct.

At the end of a series I upload the results from Sailwave to the Website which takes all of 30 sec. Just a few clicks.
We adjust our numbers twice a year and takes me about an hour to transfer the numbers from the website to my spreadsheet to adjust for the c.f. smoothing we do.
Basically take no time at all if you do your results via Sailwave

Quick question to you result gurus:

How much time do you spend each week submitting returns and sorting out local adjustment?

We have about 6 races a year that are all in, including Cruisers. We use the Byron numbers for the cruisers and the PY numbers for the dinghies. As Byron numbers are referenced to some of the better determined PYs of old we dont find too much trouble in using them in an all in race.

Oli

We do have about ~15 "all in" races during the year, and we include these in the analysis.  We use average lap timing - and typically the very slowest boats will do one lap less than the fastest.  Are you sailing on tidal waters - that may explain the differences between the two fleets.  We sail on tidal waters, but it is an estuary and competitive boats tend to find ways to avoid the tide.

We review once per year - but in the first year of adjustments we had a six month review as the changes were quite significant at the time.

Marke, sounds like you guys do a fair bit of analysis at starcross, you say you have a few handicap fleets, do you have any all in races?  how would you / do you compensate for the wider spread in handicaps?

the question that gets raised with us is that we have 2 handicap fleets and the slower fleet says they cant compete with the faster fleet in our all in races. We added more all in races to increase the data, but the numbers may still be biased towards one fleet or the other.  This is where variables in wind and tide on the day can disprove most theories.

Alex M, how do you determine a handicap on a percentage system for a boat that has no national number to base it off?  i suppose if the adjustment is 100% until it reaches 0.3cf that could acts as harsh best guess like others clubs use.  What if the initial number is more favorable?

Craiggo, do you ever race cruisers and dinghies?

All, how often do you adjust?  It seems most apply a conservative approach to the amount you move a boats handicap so do you only adjust once or twice a season?  sailors are stuck with a number all year but its not too far removed from their base.  If you adjust more harshly would you adjust more often?  Giving a chance if the number is wrong to move quickly so the sailors don't feel penalized.

Thanks for you replies so far, all very interesting.
