cut down sail? I would have thought it 'could' work for light-to-moderate wind sailing. Graeme is at least sensible enough to know when dinghy sailors start talking about testing their 'heavy air technique' it's time to reach for a board or kite....

If I sailed at a sea venue then it would be hard to look past the Contender right now....
it would be worth a cal to P&B though first, ask Ben McGrane about that high cut clew sail. I don't like the thought of getting under that boom- but to be fair, I haven't sailed one since 1996, so it's a bit difficult to remember how much of an issue it would be. Yes but my last attempt (MPS) proved fruitless, so what would you recommend? Contender? They weigh a ton and have massive sails for my 67 kgs. Farr 3.7? I wouldn't sail a board less than 3.9, so that's hardly going to cut it. Not much choice in single handed trapeze boats that are manageable, don't even talk about RS600's |

Awh man ... it didn't work ... bummer... Perhaps you could try these things called trapezes ... they are quite well proven my thousands of people and all you need is half reasonable motor skills; can be achieved with very limited fitness.

Well I'm sorry to report, all that early sea trials proved was a transference of 'pain' in the brief period prior to my spectacular cable tie assisted dismount and horizon inversion, probably due to the style of harness I was using which has quite a low hook, all that happened was the pain became more apparent in my quads which is unusual and thus even less capable of being endured since I have a certain resistance born of practise now to the normal abs ache.
I have also to admit that in P.I.S.S.ing it 'in' so to speak even more complications followed, including rig spinning right round the front, the sheet system going adrift, one of my footstrap 'floats' floating away and involving a swim. So I had to totally invert the boat spin the rig round under water, then right it, all very tedious not to mention knackering, which left me with the conclusion, no amount of rig trickery is going to make up for what we all know to be true. Fitness cannot be Ignored. So it's going to be back pounding the bloody pavements or biking big hills for the foreseeable future and plenty of damned sit ups.. And I thought I could give that all up with this supposedly gentile sport of gentlemen. #gutted |

Really, In light to medium airs I'd say that mainsheet is still king with regards to leech tension. In those conditions pressure is very variable and the leech profile will need to be changed for the gusts to gain height. As soon as you are powered up it is 100% vang ... but mainsheet is key when trimming between height & speed in light airs. What classes are you referencing as "serious development classes" ? Not the Cherub I assume ....

How much does the off the boom sheeting influence the Blaze/Halo leech? The one I sailed a couple of times always seemed have a stupidly powerful kicker, enough that as a then Laser sailor I was easily over-cooking it.
