Sounds like a very long winded way of agreeing with the proposition without wanting to say so to me... Of course they're not as viciously expensive as they were in the last days of wood, but its notorious that Merlin sailors have long loved an expensive boat...

They also don't want to let any riff-raff in either. Presumably that's the reason for outlawing any sponsorship on sails or hull.

For club racing, a competitive boat can be bought for £2-£3k.

The other thing to remember is that Merlin's hold their value if they are looked after. It is not unusual to sell a boat for what you paid for it when you bought it.

If you are prepared to do a little work usually stripping and varnishing a good club boat can be bought for less than a thousand.

That's what I mean......£6-£7.....mind you my Smokers cost me £100......we only sailed it a few times then someone offered me £500....well, no argument!

because they are the mutts nuts....  a classic racing dinghy loaded with charm and charisma, with enough chutzpah to turn around to its critiques and say 'I'm a racing dinghy.  I am the way I am.  Take me or leave me; frankly my dear, I couldn't give a damn'.

I thought that a modern Merlin was limited to those with spectacular wealth?

The reason for voting for the Merlin Rocket apart from the fact that I sail one (even though I do not qualify under grumps definition), is that the boat is a joy to sail. Very responsive, capable of being sailed well in all winds from close to zero right up to gale force if the crew is up to it, offers very competitive sailing on national and local circuits (at least in the Midlands), suitable on a wide variety of waters from small inland waters and rivers to open sea, modern with carbon spars, etc. I could go on.

To quote shamelessly from a well known TV series, we like to party!!
