And you also need to stress what you can do for them, not vice versa.
the same, but different...

Perhaps get the RYA and laser stuff up on that FB page though.... it is probably far more important if the pathway thing is serious.

I'll mention that to him - perhaps a sailing biography piece at the intro.....
.

I think that would be helpful, it should list his key successes in terms of results (not just squad selections but actual regatta results).

If you are seeking sponsorship you have to demonstrate you have a credible foundation to support your aspirations. Otherwise you just look like a fantasist.

I think that the page is his first step of social media stuff to assist with future sponsorship bids - I'm a complete biff with this sort of thing but I believe that the more followers/likes/whatever, the more helpful it'll be when making proposals to companies.

Apologies to all if I over-reacted there..... I only posted the original message because I know there's quite a few Forumites that know Cameron and may want to follow him on his page. Cam's been involved with the RYA Squad system for over 5 years now, working his way through the pathway in Toppers, L 4.7s, Radials and now standards. He loves his sailing for sailing's sake, not just squad-chasing and this is something I've encouraged, with him taking opportunities to see life outside of the pathway by experiencing OKs, Spitfires and crewing the Alto. Variety is the spice.....

Those of us with talented children have to be very wary of the way we promote them, hence my 'The boy' and now the 'former boy'.

The way to international or Olympic stardom is surely via the squad system but bugger that. Sail for fun! The 'Boy' and 'Former Boy' has 11 national level titles at the age of 27, minor classes I admit but what fun we have had!

Mate; calm down ... if you don't welcome comments then don't put this kind of stuff out there on an internet forum ... no-one is slating anyone ...

take a chill... no one is slating, sniping or otherwise.  Just suggesting that the Laser stuff you now mention, with all the Volvo logos everywhere, is probably far more relevant to that Olympic Pathway b**locks than getting halfway up the fleet in the D-Ones.

Good luck to him, genuinely.

Then you'll be delighted to know that he was picked up by the RYA to transition directly in to the Laser Std as he's too big for the Radial (this at only 14). He's also unable to take part in ISAF International Laser events as there's a lower age limit of 17 (sailing age), hence him taking the opportunity to broaden his horizons.

Excellent ... it was no doubt a fun event but it is not the place to get noticed by the RYA if he really does have "Olympic aspirations"

You need to be doing the youth pathway in the Laser radial.

Jamie Calder is 15 and is on his way to the ISAF youth worlds this summer; that is where he needs to be ...

Now; many would argue that he's better off having fun sailing the D-1 ... but that is not the typical route to Olympic glory ...

With the greatest respect, I fully agree with the above.  I doubt very much that the RYA will concern themselves with mid-fleet result in an emerging class populated by predominantly middle age blokes.

It's a token result on a sailing CV it at best, the squad route is almost certainly the only path to tread if Olympic aspirations are genuine.  Be careful what you wish for on that front....  the D-One sounds a lot more fun to me.
