All my photos were of the beginners trying out the boat. Probably none of them adjusted any controls, perhaps it just gradually dropped. We were doing some changeovers on the water to save time. None of them were Laser sailors. We had all just been in L2000s for the weekend which of course has a high boom, so may have been comparative. I still think the boom was too low for me - compared with the Lightning. Those opinions were mine and of a couple of the other beginners. |

Has a halyard lock so surprised if it wasn't all the way to the top, for the record the boom isn't low! If you sail a phantom, laser in fact virtually any dinghy the boom height is not a problem.
Probably best to keep this thread inside the dzero thread guys and gals, get messy otherwise

Who didn't hoist the main right up, and who pulled on the cunningham on the numberless boat?! Not a Laser sailor, hopefully?
![]() With a boom that low, every inch counts.

We had a total of 16 people give the boat a try, some getting a fair bit of time in the boat. I shall try to do a bit of a write up on my thoughts (and from the direct comparison we did against a Laser). The day was not really conducive for picture taking but Er-Indoors did get snappy with the camera right at the end of the day (in the best of the sunshine but not the best of the wind).

So I had a go today at the end of a day learning level 3 stuff in L2000s. Only 10 mins mind you so this is not a thorough test!
I liked: Styling Speed Nippiness (yes I had to extreme hike instead of extreme perch! And I was seen so it really happened) Sail set well Clean cockpit Simplicity Easy to pull ropes on (lots of blocks) Lovely cleats! I didn't like: Bit too powerful for me - couldn't hike that long with my knees and unfitness although the side curve was comfy Daggerboard - also found both this and rudder quite stiff (maybe as new?) Lines at front so you had to lean forward to adjust any of them Boom a bit low for comfort I felt like the front was digging in but perhaps I was sitting too far forward (overcompensating for the Lightning!) Personally don't like transom mainsheets but a laser sailor would prefer it - a clever tiller to avoid the ropes. And no falls to grab when gybing arrghhh No grab handles or inserts to drag my sorry body across the boat when tacking It was white ;-) The Lightning is safe but I am glad I had a go, and that sailing the Lightning and having instruction from Winging It has now given me the confidence to actually try out different boats - would not have happened last year! We had some fairly beginner sailors try it today and they managed well in shifty gusty conditions. There will be some photos later - still uploading.... |

Sailing starts at 10am, and the Suntouched team are bringing three boats so plenty to go round! Judging by the forecast the weather should be just right for putting the boats through their paces!
