Nobody ever moans about the Skipper 14.

Those bloody Skipper 14's......

Or the Laser 13...

I am quite capable of moaning about the Skipper 14 and indeed the 12 both dreadful, the little rail round the bow, the choice of two colours (yellow and blue) both pre-weathered, the naff gold flexible spars, the plywood gaff jaws, washing line for sheets, completely flat sails in matching faded colours, complete lack of need to ever sit out, but I was 40 years younger and they were truely great time Wink

As an Oppie parent (yes, an aspirational one with binoculars!) the Grafham event was brilliant.  My experience of Grafham is they always put on great events and the facilities and organisation are superb (also credit to the Oppie committee who provide race officers and organisation and no doubt more).  The weather helped, and to see close on 300 Oppies launching and heading onto the water was a lovely sight.

As for a blanket box - nope, I agree with Winging It.  I have been surprised with how good a boat they are, although the fact that they get such large fleets tells a story.  For me, they pass one of the major tests of owning a boat - I get excited buying bits for it!  By contrast I never had that feeling with the Laser or Topper, but do with the Furball.  And, to slightly keep on topic, whilst some of the sail controls could be improved, I think the overall package works so well I wouldn't actually change anything.

(I should add I am not a member of Grafham, nor am I invloved with the Oppie Class association so my opinions are mine and free of bias (other than having a child who sails Oppies obviously!))

Now then, everyone seems to be eulogising about this D zero/Punk thingy. Is it the 'current' perfect must have singlehander? If I was to sail it and find it as attractive as everyone seems to then I would be wishing to change my old Lightning to open transom, carbon mast, fully batten, hard chine etc.....in fact a Punk copy. Sooner or later someone had to come along and distill sensible suggestions into a 'new' boat, is this it? If this is it then it should sell in good numbers and dent Laser over time. Will you all be moaning about it in 40 years like Laser? Out of date, old fashioned etc? (just rambling).

And the gust response? Guys in our club say it's much less work on a gusty day

I suppose so, I honestly can't remember that far back, but then again I have a stiff Superspar carbon. I found that playing the main was far more important, ensuring that I kept the boat flat rather than worrying about the top of the mast. I am a complete and utter lardarse though so maybe its more important to those lighter gentlemen.

I think the main difference I noticed is the lack of weight up top when gybing, it doesn't want to keep going quite the same. Also my boat used to fall over if left unattended with the tin rig, doesn't now.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

For smaller kids the tera seems to be a bit of a handful.

It's the rig that makes the oppie so good for the smaller ones. The down side is that it is a huge box to fill with water.

There's a boat at our club that had an oppie hull, but in front of the bulkhead is covered/sealed by a foredeck, and it has curved side deck buoyancy. It looks more modern and should fix the issue of loads of water to bail out.

Never seen another though.
