i discovered about the fuller number at the weekend
it starts with his optimum time watch which made him early for the start. so best not to be over just crash into the boat below or capsize on top. then to dive into a non existant gap at the windward mark whislt out of control. so the fuller number will never be 360 or 720. just the amoiunt of rules he breaks in one race and boats he hits which i think tallied out about 5 rules and 3 boats |

If you're interested in a very good second hand sail. My other half has a virtually unused banks sail, cut for a Claridge carbon mast that she wants to sell. It's a couple of years old and done a couple of opens.

Mothlee
Maybe ... if ready ! Hull was a total 'freebie' a few months ago but just survived Nov.5th and has cluttered up the workshop and demanded crazy amount of time to sort since. It was the first 'wood worrier' project for several decades but reminds me exactly why '786' will possibly be the very last wooden boat ever for me. Seriously. Still it was an interesting one to do. 'Now & then' will possibly hit the water on Sunday with its 20 year old sail ... if it can reasonably cope in handicap without needing a new sail etc then we will see about a few BM meetings during the year ..... The object was to pursue 'something completely different' ... and it sure is ! (likely to make even 'So-slow's' look racy) ![]() |

As you would expect, the formula breaks down away from the data set on which it was based...
It calculates an Oppy at 1440 (vs 1665 in real life) And a Norfolk Punt at 996 (vs approx 908 in real) So it seem to make small boats seem faster, and large boats seem slower... It calculates my Cape Cod Frosty at 1500 dead... but since it's likely to be a binary performance boat, that might be pessimistic... |

Now that would be interesting. Cirrius are you going to be making an appearance at the first bm open of the year? 😊

Hooray, I've missed the Fuller number!
Have the Solo and Streaker been run through it? Reading back through the thread just isn't going to happen... |

Here for the benefit of those in the Hadron thread talking about this idea again. I have bikes to ride dogs to exercise and Pubs to visit so i shall return and see how lively a discussion this can regenerate.

How so Jim?
Just to be clear, I think the PY scheme is the best method we have. Could it be improved? Probably, but the extra effort may not be worth the gain. I do not for one second think this, or any other formula, should replace the PY scheme. But a formula could possibly be used, judiciously, to supplement it, especially where there is little historic data to go on.
Making the formula more closely match the PY numbers is not a guarantee that the formula has improved, because we can not make the assumption that the PY numbers are right in every case. This is clearly not least because the PY numbers themselves vary from year to year. Sometimes there are good reasons why the numbers change, but often I believe it is just noise in the signal or a change in the quality of the class. |
