The (former) boy would make it go very fast indeed. He tends to do that, I've noticed...

No, sorry, I tend to be a watcher rather than a do-er these days......I might stick the former boy in it and see what he can do.....

Unfortunately I doubt if he will ever be able to travel as he is rather over run with wives and children.
I had noticed how low the rocker was which encouraged me to think that fore and after trim would not be critical, somehow though the racks look too far back, perhaps a bit of wind levels it all up.

It is going to be 'time on the water' - just as in any other class.  The design is a recognised low rocker one tending towards rather fast when/if you get it right. 15st is not that heavy ....  and the tin mast is not much of a handicap either, the 2014 and current national champion won with one only last month as stated previously.  'Trim sensitive'  - ie it rewards finesse my friend !

Encourage him along to a Blaze event when the rudiments are there - you can learn more in a couple of days against class competition than 30 days on your own.  At least you can learn if it is set up correctly - which may not be the case.  Next one is Lymington in about 8 or 9 days time....

My mate has just bought a Blaze. I presume it is an old boat, tin mast, carbon boom, red racks. He has sailed it twice so far in light winds. The owner in question is quite a big lad, probably about 15 stone...or more. What puzzles him (and me watching) is how trim sensitive it is. If he sits  on the racks or in between the racks the transom digs in producing a very big hole at the rear. If he moves forward then the bow seems to dig in. This effect is indeed increased because the hull is two tone but the boat seems to lumber. The hull seems to have plenty of volume and should carry weight well.

Any opinions on this....or is he just too fat!

..... and happy to see it is going strong post carbon-mast adoption.

The way we did it was to ensure the carbon option mast was strictly controlled - ie single source and all identical and that the same North one design sail works as well on both alloy and carbon masts.  It was and is an upgrade and was not the start of another chapter in any 'arms race'.

... and of course the new 2014 National champion did use an alloy one.  Carbon is very nice to use indeed but as we have said on many occasions it is not essential on the Blaze.

We are now going to see if we can also get 50+ along to the Northampton Inlands in October.

Not many women in those Nationals, don't women sail Blazes?

True and a too common issue within many classes.  Catherine Devies was the only one at the Warsash Nationals this time and although there have been a number of excellent women in the class over the years we have not produced a real fleet of them yet at championships.

As explained previously the prime objective of the Fire sail option was to encourage the 'young(er) / Old(er) / very lightweight / female'  groups within the class.  They love the boat but the vast majority of them want something more tailored to their weight and strength.  Our venerable chairman tried out a Fire sail on the first couple of (windier) days at Warsash and loved it.... (71 years young and gusts up to 28kn are not an ideal combination with the standard sail).   He is looking forward to next years nationals at HISC to being accompanied by a lot more ... and we suspect of racing with the women has something to do with it !
