I was thinking more of one off annual events. Weekend regatta sort of thing?

Burghfield has had an Asymmetric Series for 6 or 7 years every Sunday. Seems to work well. If the wind is suitable, we get windward / leeward. If the wind is across the lake, we go around the cans with the rest of the club: the changes bring out different skills and abilities across the classes.
Racing is mainly LDC boats: Vareo, 2000, 200, 400, 500, Vision. Typically 10-12 boats each week; sometimes up to 20, when every class is at home.

well then you are lucky.   I count my blessings to have class racing at all, but to have it in Mustos (where you learn so much more, and so much more quickly, by sailing with other Mustos) I can quite see why you would choose it as a way to spend time on the water.

I thought the same, but thought twice about posting it as I assumed no one would agree with me.

You couldn't have said something MORE APPEALING for asymmetric racing if you'd tried.

We run an asymmetric fleet at Oxford Sailing Club, nominally for boats with a PY of 1005 or lower, although it is open to slower boats.  We usually have a turnout of 6-10 boats, with a couple of dozen different entrants in a typical series. We sail windward-leeward courses, handicapping is essential to cope with a fairly wide range of boat speeds.

If you can get enough boats together, then PY bandings will work, roughly, but you do need enough boats in each banding to make good racing, of course.

It does appear that the events which reach critical mass pretty much include everyone, and once you put limitations on it (such as a boat needing an assy kite) then numbers drop rapidly.

I'm pretty sure a 505 and a 49er will get a more meaningful race than a Feva and a 49er, bowsprit or no.

Some of the more popular SJ events seem to run slow, medium and fast type of fleets don't they?

I'd go with that personally....

A fleet:

MPS/700/AC/49er/B14/800/Cherub '05 (Boss & L5k if there are any in working order still)

B Fleet:

Cherub 97 / L4k / RS500 / RS400 / D-One / RS100 10.2

C fleet:

RS100 8.4 / RS200 / L2K / Vareo / FEVA
