There are some classes which have Mickey Mouse nationals with 8-10 boats. I thought it used to be that only RYA national classes could hold nationals
But have to agree we all know that winning the solo, gp14, scorpion, rs###, musto skiff etc nationals is a huge thing

Well I think Nationals should stick....there aren't that many that are genuninely very soft. Using the term Nationals get the attention of the average non-sailor, and perhaps give some indication of what it takes to win.

It seems ISAF allows classes to do as they please in this matter. Regardless of fancy titles given out we all know which ones are hard to win and which are a bit soft ...

AIUI ISAF don't worry how many nations turn out for the worlds so long as the class still qualifies as International, which is based on how mamany boats are allegedly sailing in a required number of nations and continents. OTOH the ICF (canoe federation) e.g. IC class does require a minimum no of nations present, but as we might learn from America's Cup history, nationality can be a flexible concept... |

did n't the IYRU /ISAF try to enforce this at one point ? or was that a suggestion that only 'International' classes could have Continental or World champs

ISAF do have criteria, the problem is some are 'extremely' international such as the Laser, OK, 49er and some 'scrape in' and some no longer meet the requirements but used to and should be struck off (usually historical classes) such as 5.5m etc but ISAF are too scared to cut them as they are too well backed by people of high standing and they fear a backlash.
Classes do get told to stop using the term 'World' Wayfarer, Albacore and Solo are notable examples

Some more realistic terminology like that would be good. It's also a bit silly that some classes (including one I sail and love) can have a "world championship" that has entries from 4 countries, whereas other classes have 25 or more countries at their worlds. Surely the classes with only a few countries represented should have an "international class championships" rather than a "world championships." |

Neither was Palestine for years, but I reckon most people called it a country. And anyway as I've already told you that the GB is really called England, or it was when we took over all of our neighbours on this isle, and it was England when we invaded France in the middle ages. We only started calling it the United Kingdom to make those neighbours feel a little less aggrieved that they were part of England. Therefore in reality this isle is still England whatever the outlying areas think. I agree with Rupert though, lets go back to the good old days when it were the different kingdoms, I quite like being in Wessex, sounds nicer. In fact I might start calling my county Sumersaete again now we have our own flag at last

Atrhletics does divide into 'home countries' for Chamionships etc and there is also the Commonwealth Games next year. Sailing isn't a CG sport. Good thing or bad?

England is not a country recognised by the UN, it is not recognised by the EU, it does not have sovereign power to pass its own laws, it does not have embassies in other countries and there are no ambassadors to England. My passport doesn't call me English.
