Unlikely, what was the sail brand he was advertising on his Solo, back in the day he was known as what you would refer to as a builder of replica sails, he had a unique ability if someone won with a suit of sails, the next week Vic would show up with or could build you a set similar or so I heard, I never really knew him as a dinghy sailor and Lester an I used to decide what to build for Tush race sails, his would work better for large sailors and mine would work better for lights (and pump well)

I wonder how he does in one, Vic (his nickname) was always a bit of a dab hand in a dinghy, did you know he once campaigned an FD trying for the Olympics?

no you are right- definitely in the wrong age demographic for the Laser. But do come along Solo sailing... you could even buy a boat off your ol' mate Rog....

I really can't see it offers anything I've not already experienced in One Design Sailboard racing, except maybe a degree of permanence mid fleet, I still remember what it took to win One Design events and the last one of those was back in 1985 aged 37 and I paid a heavy price for that. I long since learned the 'board speed makes you a tactical genius' epithet was the easiest way to victory or if not victory then a less punishing race and whilst there was banter ashore sure enough, there was precious little actually on the water, you'd be in too much pain from physical stress. I don't see anyway of making those Laser things actually go fast without a lot of similar kinetic effort, so I'll beg to differ with you there chum, I'm too old for One Designs now unless of course you can point me at the 65 yr old Laser guy at even the front half of the fleet. |

indeed... now all he needs to do is understand that whilst it could never be on the same level as the team work in a crewed boat, that banter and camaraderie is also available in singlehanded sailing.... typically in boats which are the same, sailing the same course on a first past the post system. Our Laser fleet definitely has a good 'craic' about it, the Solo guys are a really nice bunch too.

I think young Fuller that in your convoluted way you seem to be saying why dinghy sailing is great.
(obviously you want something). Well it is great, it covers so many varied skills and occupations. There are slots for all ages, attitudes and skill levels. One can design boats, build boats, talk boats, paint boats, you can complain, praise and be seduced by boats. Boats can be cheap or costly fast or slow. The highest level of dinghy racing costs less than the lowest level of motor racing and if you just want to take a hamper out then you can do that as well. The two common denominators are wind and water. There is usually free wind and plentiful water. If it floats you can sail it. This forum has fat and thin contributors, clever and stupid contributors.....actually not that many stupid, old and young contributors but the one thing that we all do is float boats (or boards) on water and make the wind push them along. I shall now return to my high tech boat repair facility and cut up some Ikea nylon cutting board to re enforce the thwart on my Tasar. This boat will sail on Saturday after a 4 year rest, I will enjoy it and new members will gasp in admiration at the beauty of my reconstruction. There are so many things in sailing.
