What you don't want, yet often tends to happen, is that the spreader droops down in time. So pushing it to its uppermost position (in which it should as nearly as possible bisect the angle in the shroud) then taping it there would be my preference.

Self amalgamating tape can be purchased from chandlers or screwfix, it is much much better than standard insulating tape and will last years. I tape the ends of the shrouds when the boat is rigged, just lay the boat over on a piece of grass, use loads of it . This will hold the spreaders in the right place on the shrouds.......... this will hold it OK without wire or nut I reckon

Thanks for the replies. So if using the locking wire, run it through the hole in the spreader, round the shroud, and then wrap all in tape.
Or if using the nut, secure the nut to the spreader using tape, and then run the shroud through the nut.
Does the shroud need to run free through either the wire or nut or can it be taped up? Will ordinary insulation tape do?
Thanks, just need to sort out my shopping list.

As above: tape it..........use plenty of self amalgamating tape, it'll last lots longer. I would use tape anyway as the ends of the spreaders can cause damage to the main if left uncovered.

Yes, the shroud should be held in by a bit of stainless steel locking wire. But if you don't have any handy a wrap with pvc tape will do just fine.

Hi, i've recently purchased a laser fun dinghy. It's basically an early Laser II regatta model but without the spinnaker and trapeze. Looking to have some fun with it teaching the kids.
I have a rigging question in relation to the shrouds.
This model has shrouds and a spreader on the mast, but not the diamond type on the regatta. The spreader has a U shaped cut out at each end to hold the shroud wire and there is a small 2mm hole set 0.5cm in from the U shapred cut out. When rigging the shroud wire stay firmly located in the U shaped cut out, however I'm sure when under load one of the shrouds will come away from spreader, and hopefully return back to the U cut out.
Should there be something to hold the shroud in to the U shape cut out all the time, maybe a split ring utilising the small hole 0.5cm in from the U shape? It seemd strange there isn't anything. The instructions are in pdf format look like the shroud wires may be attached, but cannot be sure. They guy I got it from just used it as it is.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
