Can't believe draper was moaning that he blew the start due to his watch being 4s out. With all that technology and crew work ...

Prada are a bit hamstrung by having effectively a 1st gen boat, but the foiling stability and crew work is just lagging behind TNZ who are just a machine (apart from the big dive the other day).
Really looking forward to the Cup proper... |

Just watched a couple of "races" TNZ are in a different class.
Must be hard for the Prada guys who are really just making up the numbers.

yes Mike, they did... but nostaligia has a highly intimate relationship with boat racing, hence why we are still using plastic wind powered sails to zig zag upwind rather than putting the throttle down and discussing trim tabs to avoid doing a Campbell. |

... er did not a few of those 'superb' monohulls ... break up and sink in relatively light conditions ! Many events were very one sided as well so nothing new there. They did not even have the grace to 'damage themselves' in an entertaining manner and do it with some style at speed. They had very little in common with 'regular' boats in reality either so I do not understand why some are now getting misty eyed about 'the good old days'.
The AC is really about big budgets, lawyers, rule bending, big egos and tempting fate with design ... and for much of recent history that has not changed even if they have more recently switched to 2 hulls. It is 'their' ball game and yet is still mildly entertaining. The mono's were pretty dull really - close together or far apart as they often were as well. It was the big bucks intrigue that was the real show as now. The modern foiling cats are truly awesome with or without 'close racing' or the intrigue ... I'd just leave them to it ! Mike L. |

It's not that simple. As has been pointed out, this is not a new event but a case of taking an event away from one discipline -the most popular one in the sport - and giving it to another. That's bound to cause a ruckus. Apart from the two matches where the rules were determined by expensive lawyers, every AC has been a race between convetional monos, normally boats that were large versions of the standard inshore/short offshore monohull development class of their day. Many AC boats were just big versions of the 25 foot club/regatta boats of their time. The claims that the AC boats have always been the biggest, baddest, fastest and most radical are basically BS that doesn't fit the facts. Taking a major event away from its history and its parent discipline, especially a strong and vibrant discipline, is almost unknown in sport. Most fans and sportspeople would find it bizarre and repugnant, IMHO, so the comments are understandable. |

very true... but I imagine that if the Tour de France were suddenly run in recumbent bikes (which are quicker & quirkier) there'd be cycling forums full of complaints. I guess the theory goes if you want a balls out big cat race where big separation and technology failure actually becomes the interesting aspect of the race, then there are better ones to follow. Of course why monohull sailors feel a sense ownership over the AC isn't something I can't really defend, other than to show a couple of photos- of close racing, in monohulls, when the AC used to be good to watch. I can say one thing though, had Team Origin come to fruition, in monohulls, with Ainslie, Percy, Simpson and no doubt a few other names we'd recognise, we'd all be doing a lot less work and a lot more youtube/front page watching and commentary....
