From what I can see it does exactly the same as a bent bit of 0.8mm welding wire which works a treat for me, and costs significantly less!

I have not heard of the D-splice tool. Is it worth the £40.00?

Splices on modern control lines to form continuous lines can easily be done with a screwdriver or bradawl and a piece of wire doubled to pull the outer through, no fids or splicing needles are needed.

I was kinbdly given a D-Splice tool by a friend. its a great bit of kit and certainly the best splicing fid/tool on the market. Splicing is an easy and very rewarding task. As the links above really there are loads of guides on the net |

A three strand back splice and three strand eye are the easiest. There are numerous books about the subject and these can sometimes be picked up at car boots or jumble sales. The Ashley Book of knots is the bible and has really clear drawingse of knots, bends, splices and hitches. It is expensive but worth it. The online examples above are best for more modern rope.

Some good videos here.
12 strand single braid is probably the easiest of all to splice.

I've got plenty of time on my hands at the moment and I'm interested in learning to splice rope. For those that have learned I have a few questions:
1) What kit is worth buying (Fids etc.)? Money is fairly tight so looking for minimal outlay on this. 2) Where is the best place to start? I would like to eventually work my way up working with high tech lines and being able to trust my spices in critical high load applications (yacht halyards, kite sheets etc.) but I'm assuming 3 strand is the best place to start? Where do you go from there? 3) Are there any specific online resources people have found useful? Edited by Quagers - 17 Jun 13 at 1:51pm |
