If you look at your class association website regularly or visit their dinghy show stand then you should join as it is website costs and show costs which will be the largest expenses.
 
Open meetings are usually self funding but it's the advertising and promotion of the class that costs money. It doesn't matter whether you have many or no opens, the other costs are the same and those are what keeps up the popularity of a class and hence the secondhand value of your boat so pay up even if you aren't going to sail.

That's a nice attitude to have, if you can afford it.
When the sub has to go up because not many people are members, that may start to exclude people.

Well, I've upped and joined the Alto Class association, so there goes that particular neighbourhood.
Only cost four hundred odd quid and they chuck in a free spinnaker..
