It's the same reason Contenders still weigh a ton and my crew did his back in yesterday lifting one up the bloody beach.

The contender could be a fast user friendly easy to handle modern single hander - it aint because it is held back by class luddites.

Paris - Roubaix bikes tried it in the 90's, nowadays flex is built in to the design of the fibres. The trek domane that won the year is designed to flex around the seat tube. Just like they were 50 years ago according to chris249!

Suspension in road bikes is MUCH older than that, with patents being awarded back in the 18th century. Which arguably lends further support to the basic point that there is no evidence that cycling, which is a comparable sport, is developing faster than sailing.

Grumpf may talk of luddites, but then again he was in the area of sailing that claims to have developed faster than any other area of the sport, and certainly crashed in popularity like no other. Maybe he and his mates who sought to bolster their own pockets by trying to create artificial obsolescence should have listened to a few luddites, then windsurfing may still be as strong as it once was.  :-)

Road bikes are certainly allowed suspension, they don't (even on the versions for riding cobbles) because it weighs too much for too little gain. Plenty tried front forks in the early 90s on Roubaix, and Bianchi built a full sus one that failed. Most of the time of course they're racing on smooth(ish) tarmac. Paris-Roubaix is wierd and sees cyclocross bikes in use at some teams

Given that everything you write is laughable, Grumph, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the bits you think are funny.  And just possibly, Clive was being tongue in cheek there too.

'Offcuts of Panzer' might have been appropriate  - given your belief the Finn is too heavy. The Lancaster line, i was pointing out, had it all backwards as usual

Of course, the Finn was also designed by a Swede, not a Brit in his shed, but we can't expect you to know that

Because our gooches are made of steel, that's why. Wink

Weight is a major issue with road bikes, why carry extra weight for very little gain, most roads are smooth, (apart from potholes!) and you lock off the suspension uphill anyway.
