I've never sailed a flying fifteen, but I've noticed them not exactly hanging about upwind? Relative to conventional dinghies that is, skiffs planing upwind excepted! |

Woodsy's up here with me locked into another winter sports trade show missing the warmest sunniest weekend of the year so far. He's telling me what a great boat the RS100 is, obviously on the downhill bits, reckos up hill its worse than a flying fifteen , at which point we got interupted before i could launch into him about blokes his age and why would they, maybe ill wander over to his booth tomorrow and remind him...

We have about 13 or 14 boats (probably still the biggest fleet......there were 2 out, Mike Mac on holiday, Mark on crutches, Andy not well, Woodsy..??, Simon thought it too light (!) etc, etc: I have a Solo as well for a while (nationals at HISC this year), and since i had not finished replacing the slot gasket on the 100 and there were so many visiting solos from the frozen north, I thought it rude not to get thrashed by them (and duly was!)
challenging day as Mozzy said, but good fun, and great to see so many visitors. Had there been wind I guess there would have been another 15/20 boats.

My prediction for a Merlin came true. Never really enough wind for the very fast boats to get powered up.
The race started for the very slowest boat in next to no wind, but with the first leg down tide they at least could get away from the start and put some distance into the chasers. From then the wind picked up just a tad, enough to be powered up going upwind (in the 200 at least) but never spilling main. The breeze gradually swung right throughout the race. For the 200's the tactical decision on both beats was whether to get out of the tide by going left or hook up with inside of the persistent right shift on the right. With a slackening tide it was unusually for Chichester Harbour the wind which was deciding factor and boats going right generally paid. For the later starters the beats had slanted and were very starboard tack heavy. Sure enough, with almost an hour still to go the Merlins came past me and off in chase of the Mirror who despite the light winds at the start had drawn out quite a lead. Coming into the final mark it looked like the fast approaching Merlins would take all the top spots. But the wind eased back to a drift giving the slower leading boats some extra time. Eventually most of the Merlin did come through but there was a good mix of boats throughout and yo couldn't doubt the pedigree of the sailors at the front. Well done to everyone and a big thank you o all the visitors who helped make it such a good event. See you all next year for high tea and another winter pursuit!

I nearly asked him if he was GRF... What RS100's? I have a feeling the event will be a lot bigger next year. HISC's car park is full of cruisers laid up, so they probably cannot accommodate the hundreds of visitors they get for Fed Week, but today had a bit of a 'select gathering' feel to it. It was interesting to actually see Icons on the water, could not quite catch 04, bit of a lesson in how strangling a kite down a tight reach doesn't pay that well. |
