Not all of the Vendee boats H/G's have failed - don't forget Javier Sanso is still there and 100% fossil fuel free...not a drop of fuel was put onboard and Dominique Wavre has no complaints, having only used 10litres of diesel since the start: http://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/news/newswire/10707/dominique-wavre-s-energy-system.html

They are a great idea and fit nicely into the ethos of powering your boat's electronics and systems naturally, rather than with a stinky engine ... however, I do think that the proliferation of technology inside boats, particularly in navigation systems, is taking away from old fashioned chart reading and plotting skills... not a good trend IMO.

As a positive the vendee has proved to be one hell of a sea trial for the equipment. I'm sure the manufacturers will be working on improvements and it wont be long before more robust units are produced.

Does seem like a really neat idea though. More reliable than solar panels and I've never been a fan of the mini wind turbine on transoms

The problems on the vendee have been a mixture of poor stock design, competitors hitting things and electronic failures out with the unit. It seems a really neat solution for your average cruising boat. The higher speeds of the vendee clobe require adjustment of the pitch of the blades this is another layer of compexity the cruisers do not have to deal with. Pretty expensive though.

I'm thinking a fair few dollars will be spent on re-designs when the Vendee is over.... might be Ok cruising along <10knts, but obviously a few lessons needed to be taken into account when cruising at ~18knts is more the norm!

Ok guess that makes sense.

Seems like a lot of engineering to just hang a prop off the back but I can see the thinking

That one in particular is a Watt&Sea Cruising Hydrogenerator - most the Vendee boys are running the Racing version which has variable pitch props to reduce drag.

Yeah - Hydrogen

Brilliant idea - you make power for free with little to no (read so small not worth calculation in real world applications) drag penalty

Small problem when they are your primary source of power and you break them - see Vendee (Is it 5 of them now?)
When you find a big kettle of crazy it's probably best not to stir it - Pointy Haired Boss
