Is Dave buying it then?

Exactly - you tell you are planing by the fact that your mouth and nose are not full of sanding dust!

you are so effing wrong, you couldn't effing make it up... everyone knows a Skiff is a stitch and glue, flat bottomed, open fishing boat. & Toby, you only plane once, just before laminating iirc.

I don't recall any report with any boat coming out on top at the first trials, although I do recall just about every class involved claiming they came out on top. And I very clearly recall the rather strange limited aims ISAF were putting on the first trials which made it quite clear to me at the time that they weren't "the trials".

And I also seem to remember that the RS boat at those trials was a minimally modified RS800: what the thread starter might call a lipstick dinghy perhaps?

Are you very sure you aren't writing your own interpretation on the history here?

I completely understand the logic in selecting the 49er fx for the girlies Olympics. Already established supply chain and loads of hulls around for people to practice with etc etc.
Back to the point of the original thread was its just not a very inspiring boat for the y and y dinghy of the year award.

I found that out on my first trial sail in a 300 too Matt. Method totally by accident but it worked and I carried on doing it. Still do it to an extent on the phantom when its not a backwards one, but the shrouds and lowers get in the way a bit. I think that Mike has it right about the skinny sides. The Phantom rules mean that the side tank profiles are required which mean that the boat floats high. Some of the wooden ones have solved it by have cutaways in this area meaning that they float low and then the water all rushes out as soon as its upright. I first saw this on a Marauder in the early 80's.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest
