Well, 1968, me 6yrs old, Dad bought a canoe which we paddled around on the Thames. Dad saw a Merlin fleet getting ready at Laleham and decided that was what he wanted to do. Bought Mirror 35508 and built it from a kit in the garage, called it Dambrieisi. Launched on the Thames, forgot to put the cbd down, blew sideways x-river, got tangled in the lines of fisherman on the opposite bank. Joined Hillingdon SC (Mirror fleet only) and it grew from there. Days spent bunking off school taking mates down to the boat...re-rigging everything cos I thought I knew how to tune a Mirror. Coming home from school on hot summer days with my school uniform dripping wet (not good capsizing in yer school uniform) and saying got caught in a downpour. Oppies? squads? Parents with more money than sense? I didn't need it!

I started sailing at Abbey S.C. in my dad's Heron #47, crewing for a couple of years until he gave it to me for my 14th birthday (1957). He went on to a Graduate, and a couple of seasons later I followed suit. Then moved to Medley S.C and sailed British Moth whilst at Teddies, as well as the school Fireflies.
Left school 1960 , moved to work at Rolls Royce in Crewe, crewed in a Firefly for a while, bought an OK dinghy, and in 1965 moved to Oz. There I sailed a few different classes - VJ, Lightweight Sharpie, Moth, OK.
Back home in 1976, got a Street Legal 12.....then had a period of 20yrs not owning a boat (too busy and too poor), until I moved to Anglesey in the 90's and eventually bought a Smokers Merlin for pottering about.
Now living in West Coast USA, Whidbey Island, own an old Leader built by Smallcraft of Southampton#85, and a Wood Flying Junior, built in Holland in 1976.

so I guess that makes me quite an old fart....

Successfully confusing ambition with ability since 1980.

My dad built a Mirror from a kit in the winter of '65/66 when I was 10. #7401 and it cost £69/19/11. Paid by 'easy monthly instalments' I think!

Interesting that. Boats are good things. They have a mechanical side to them as well as the sporting stuff. Cars are nice as well but they are more expensive and have the problem of electricity. I enjoy sailing boats, watching them, fixing them and restoring them. Nothing wrong with having a "thing about" boats.....most people on here have also. Have a look at the V twin posts for a start.

I am one of the few people who just started sailing because I have a 'thing about boats'. No-one introduced me to sailing, and neither of my parents know anything about boats, and never have done

Seems to me if a club wants to grow then turn to your members to bring their family and friends and make them very welcome.

Someone took me sailing when I was in the army serving in Germany, turned out they had no idea what they were doing. Eventually learned to sail in Cyprus in 1986 with my wife, we did a course over a couple of weekends in Albacores on the sea. Unfortunately the club was run by officers who had only run the course to get some crews as their wives would no longer sail with them. Happily my boss had a GP14 at the club so my wife and I could sail that unless his kids were out on holiday.

Didn't sail again until 1992 when I did a refresher course in Poole harbour. Then joined Broxbourne and bought a British Moth as there was a fleet of them there. Fell out of it for a few weeks as I'd never sailed a single hander before.

Had a break from 1997 until 2007 due to work, then started sailing again. Trying to improve but nobody runs advanced courses for 55 year olds.

Looks like most join through family, friends or school.

If each of us introduces two people in our lifetime the growth is assured.
