As an ex Aber boy, I'm happy to see they are pushing the boundries, but it looks like they have a better grasp of robotics than of what the Atlantic can do to even a full size boat, let alone a model.

He is attempting to complete the micro transat challenge, http://www.microtransat.org/. This is a mainly university driven challenge with a defined set of rules. The boat has to reach a 50m radius or diameter circle near America. There are latitude and longitude rules at both end.

It is a challenge of thinking out of the box to enable a sail boat to be created that can reliably get there. A truly difficult challenge given the vagaries of the ocean and I guess that is why it has not been done yet.

Just google spray or slocum glider.  They basically work by altering their displacement and then the act of diving or rising on the hydroplanes causes forward thrust.  They're mainly used for oceanography but the military are very interested in surveillance uses.

That line between intentionally designed boat and litter based random postal service is at best blurred.

I reckon most bottles would have gotten further!
FWIW there are unmanned underwater gliders that could do this trip quite easily.

I see from the pictures that much of the "bodged" look seems to bascially be silicone sealent to try to waterproof previously exposed electronics.

Sea Trials would definitely have been a good idea. Still, can't put a man down for having dreams. Can crticise a man for essentially littering the sea with potentially toxic battery chemicals.
