Hi all,
I probably need to change my forum name now as the RS600 has now been replaced by an RS300.

Anyway, I've asked Santa for some hiking shorts, but I wanted to ask some advice first. Most of the ones on the market seem to be 3/4 length ones, and I can't imagine these would be too comfy over the top of a wetsuit.

Would I be better with 'above the knee' shorts, that could be worn over the top of a 5mm steamer in winter, a 3mm suit in spring/autumn and on their own on hot days?

Or would 3/4 shorts be just as good in this respect but allowing for more flexibility in terms of clothing options (and some dodgy tan lines)?

cheers

Jamie

I find that a spray top over the hikers is fine for most days (including today) but I wear them over a long john when it's really cold.

Jamie, you can wear 3/4 all year with the right layering on top. When it was bitter cold I had a pair of plain wetsuit shorts to wear over the top as most hikers don't worry about taped/ waterproof seams material.

I know they're rather expensive for what they are, but I got a set of the Zhik Power Pads earlier this year, and can't honestly imagine going back to 3/4 lengths again. The ability to be worn with any kit is simply superb

Sandiline winter hikers, its a long John wetsuit with hiking pads built in.  mine have a had a years HARD use and apart from some light bobbling on the arse are like new.  Super warm if you add a pair of hot legs and top underneath.  I wear mine all year just control the layers and they are simply the best hikers on the market.  Seem to work for Nick Craig and Ben Ainsle as well.

Personally I don't use a wetsuit under. Its best to use lots of thermals as they trap heat between eachother and also keep you warm :) and it looks bettter :D

Wetsuit socks get me through the winter sailing, I have the rooster ones, (others are available!) and save cold feet. I do recall doing the Bloody Mary in just 3/4 a few years ago.

I haven't used them yet, but FWIW, I have just bought Sandiline hikers and they seem to be very well made.  Although unlike Russ I opted for standard 3/4 rather than the Winter Long John.

I plan to use Rooster polypro leggings underneath if it's cold and if it's really, really cold then I plan to stay at home, rocking in my chair with a hot water bottle and a hip flask grumbling about the winter fuel allowance like any good Solo sailor really ought to.

Is this some dinghy term us windsurfers don't get?
Was that 'bob' coming out of your tent?
It wasn't him that 'bobbed' my wetsuit and split it was it?
