I dunno, I go away for a few days to suffer the delights of the fatherland and what happens here?
The Coffin dodging wood botherers and more 'disturbed' inmates start going on about the continuing growth of the sailors graveyard. Whereas I would have thought the essential thing learned by those of us who have sailed together recently and have witnessed 1st hand, the stunning performance of Dan's Punk boat. Surely what we should be discussing is how it could be pressed into production and a fleet of something like that would be something worthy of a thread applauding it. The fact there are so many Solo's is a sad thing and serves none of our interests, other than for somewhere to park the elderly and near infirm rather than pack them off to Switzerland. You could use them to sail to Switzerland.

Fast forward to 2030. Young GRF may be finding it more difficult than before to hack it in 20+ knots or even haul himself back in the boat after a capsize. What will he be sailing. Any suggestions?

Having had to rescue guys of less than Graeme's age who couldn't get on the centreboard and right a goslow not long after leaving the beach, I would say that it's suitability is overstated. I suspect that all the legacy weight may also make an octogenarians life a little tougher pulling it up the beach. |

i've seen the same with a streaker. The guy didn't even try and pull him self up on to the board, just floated around and waited until a rescue boat arrived. Dangerous that to my mind.

I agree. If you can't rescue yourself from a capsize you should not be sailing whatever boat it is.
If you are not as fit as you were or would like to be for what ever reason, then you will probably only be able to recover from one or two capsizes per session before having to chuck in the towel, and you will probably not risk going out in over 20 knots. The relative stability of the goslow means it is more likely you will be able to complete a series of races in whatever conditions the rest are sailing in.

Couldn't agree more Nick. I've spent hours going from one capsize to another in both an RS600 and MPS, but on those occasions I've always been able to get righted and get it ashore on my own. It's the primary reason the rogue skiff but the dust, just impossible to right and sail away from a capsize singlehanded without a rescue boat to help... Not seaworthy.
As for Solos... Righting lines? Perfectly class legal surely???? |

No need for safety boats then
![]() ![]() On the other hand I know a guy who is very fit (Olympics fit with most days in the gym or sailing) and 22 years old who got caught out when training by a little gust and was separated from his boat by a few Metres. Thank goodness his coach was nearly ![]() Perhaps we do need safety boat then and not a beer fund ![]() So what will you do when time catches up? Oh, did I say that I quite like the way things are

I sailed a solo ashort while ago and quite liked it........but not enough to buy one, not even a decrepit woodie.
I've spent a lot of time just lately not sailing, not because I couldn't sail, but because I knew that if I fell in my wonky arm would mean I wouldn't be able to get back in. In my fitter days I knew seven capsizes of the contender was my limit, then it was time to head in. 50 years old, fatter than I want to be, but still wanting something fast and fun. The goslow will have to wait quite a bit longer. Especially since the contender worlds are at Como next year and Lake Macquarrie six months later. Time to get to the gym. |
