I have always been under the impression that you have to be a member of a sailing club and/or the national authority to compete in races. But at the recent RS800 event at Stokes Bay, two of the top three do not list a legitimate sailing club. The winner lists his club as 'RS Sailing', whilst Dave Hivey (3rd) regularly lists his club as the website address of a clothing company.

Is that allowed?

I guess if you don't want to turn people away from events for bureaucratic reasons then it's allowed.  Wink

In 2011 I was planning on racing my RS100 without being a member of a club, but I've always been an RYA member and at the time RS Owners Association so I guess I could have signed on under either of those.

But this wasn't a case of letting a newbie see if they would like it, this was two of the top three teams at an RS Grand Prix event. They may well be members somewhere, maybe not, but the names they registered under 'Club' smack of cheeky advertising.

My understanding is that you have to be a member of a club or the RYA directly. If not then you don't come under the authority of the RYA/eventually ISAF, which causes problems for cain of authority/rule 69 action etc.

On the other hand - cheeky advertsing: well I don't much care.

but if they agreed to race under RRS then if it really bothers you you could protest them

I don't see it as a problem or as very effective advertising

Goodness me guys, this is the Racing RULES forum.

(b) such a club or organization, or

(c) a member of an ISAF member national authority.

46 PERSON IN CHARGE
A boat shall have on board a person in charge designated by the
member or organization that entered the boat. See rule 75.

But if it fulfils some obligations for tax purposes, maybe 'cos they bought their boat via their company or an employer deduction, then whatever... one more boat on the race course.  I understand there's quite a few self-employed folks who run their boats via their business- especially in the lead mine brigade.

(worth noting for any tax inspectors out there, all MY own boats are paid for with post-income tax disposable income, fully VAT paid when new. I have zero interest in blurring lines between work and leisure, besides it all sounds very complicated to either sponsor yourself, or find someone else to do a reciprocal deal to run 'corporate entertainment' on a 12-14ft platform)

Not quite. If you're member of a group/organisation which is RYA affiliated then that's just as good as being a member of a sailing club or the RYA directly. Many class associations are RYA affiliated, as is the Dinghy Cruising Association.

Best wishes from deep in the woods

It doesn't really bother me, because I don't take my racing seriously enough to worry about the rules. And there's nothing wrong with a bit of good humoured cheekiness.

But I can see that it is important (and fair) that you are ultimately connected to the MNA, if you want to race under their terms.
I was just curious.
