British World class Sailors turn to the A-Class

   Giles Scott of Great Britain, current Finn European and World Champion, has today taken delivery of his first multihull, an A-class catamaran. The Weymouth based full time sailor who has recently signed for Team Korea and will be competing in his first AC45 World Series event in April is to take his first taste of an A-Class Catamaran on his home waters later this week. Giles will be reporting back with his first impressions and is keen to engage fellow sailors to the top flight multihull class.

On delivery of his Bimare XJV1, Giles was astonished at the simplicity of the rig, especially the lack of a mainsail halyard, and couldn't quite come to terms with the all up weight of only 75kgs. however he did heed the sellers advice that once sailed, he may never want to step back on a Finn!!

	Interesting to see how he goes compared to Chris F. Chris is a hugely under rated sailor IMHO, although clearly Giles is an outstanding world class sailor.

	What's the ideal crew weight for an A Class? I would have thought a Finn Sailor would be too heavy. Cheers Andrew

	I would have thought with an A-class you could get a mast and sail to match your weight.....?

	Certainly hard to imagine it being one of the worlds's more weight sensitive classes...

	I guess Giles has bought it to get some multihull experience and like most professional sailors he will get himself to the correct weight. Plus I guess it might be helpful to be a bit lighter for the AC45. Edited by Contender443 - 19 Feb 12 at 6:40pm

	Well certainly most of the top guys in the As are between 65-75kgs and the Finn guys weigh in 90-95kgs

	Fat isn't fast in most Cats. As they dont tend to plane, extra weight means extra wetted surface area and more drag. As a result heavier guys can hit a speed wall before the light guys run out of righting moment. As has been said the exercise is almost certainly about getting a feel for what the AC45 is going to be like, rather than trying to dominate A-class sailing.
