Car you mean?
Whatever you can get a towbar for.
850 mini or Morris Minor used to work OK!

Any car can tow, it depends how quick you want to go up a hill.

I read the title and thought boat engine, in that case, a 5hp will do!

Tow limits for a mini, from the manufacturer which also have legal force. http://www.uktow.com/towing%20capacity.asp#tab1

Contender + trailer is what, weight of 2-3 adults? Won't make a massive difference to the car's performance.

Nope. It is illegal to fit towbars on certain types e.g. Ford Ka.

Tim - Anything over 1 Lr will be fine. Also, the main problem with getting car/trailer combinations right is making sure you can STOP. Even the smallest of cars can tow a double trailer with, say, a pair of RS400s on it .. It may not be quick, or elegant, but it'll do it. Slam on the brakes though (small car, small brakes .. 2 disks and 2 drums usually on older small cars) and you'll just keep flying along ...

Pick a car, learn to drive that properly first before you worry about adding extra complications.

Anyway, aren't you selling your Contender?
