The Grafham Grand Prix takes place this year on January 2nd – perfectly planned to let you get away from the dishes and to blow away the seasonal excesses. Many classes are including it in their winter series and we are making special efforts to attract foiling classes and catamarans. If your class travel why not get your mates to come too. Any Class that gets 8 boats taking part will automatically get their own prizes. The details are as follows:

Entry is open to all monohulls with PY 690 to 1150, (single handers to PY 1200) and to catamarans from PY640 to 1000.

There will be four starts as follows:

  • Fast Asymmetrics (PY 720 to 924), Fast Cats (PY 640 to 781) and Foiling Moths & FF600’s.
  • Medium/Fast Handicap (PY 690 to 1020) and Medium Cats (PY 782 to 1000)
  • Slow Handicap (PY 1020 - 1150)
  • Single Handers (PY 980 - 1200

The Foiling Moths and Foiling RS600’s will start with the Fast Asymmetrics Fleet but will race as a separate, foiling handicap fleet and be awarded separate prizes. Similarly if we get 8 or more entries of any class or group of Catamarans they will also get separate prizes. The Notice of Race is here:

It is a pre-entry event and entry forms have to be in by 23 December so don't forget to get it in your diary.

Sorry about that.

Sprint Bob,
Have you got an e-mail address i can use to get in contact with you please?  I would like to talk about the possibility of use joining the W/L fleet, although we sail a 505.  I am sure i can get more 5oh's there but not with a trapezoid course.

If you are going for the sole purpose of silverware then the above points about this course or that course are valid but if you are going to compete against others then just go.

After all the problems are the same for all the sailors, so treat it like an away day that you can have FUN at.

Maybe in this country we do have too much choice of class`s of dinghy's & that will always result in this type of discussion.

Maybe the answer is for there to be a lot less diversity then the course can be set for the majority everytime.

Bert i take your point, but trying to fly a 27m2 (or however much it is) Symmetric kite deigned for W/L racing on a tight leg whilst boats which are slower then you sail past is not my idea of fun.  All i want is to race on the W/L course.  We won't win anything as we are sh*t, but i don't want to tow the boat for 2hrs 30mins in the freezing cold, to be told i can't use my kite.  I don't speak for the rest of the 5oh's but if we have to race on a Trap course i don't think may others will turn up.  We wouldn't of bothered with the Dash, but our boat was there and we wanted to show our support to Draycote, they have after all really looked after the 5o5 fleet this year.

You don't have to have a 27m2 kite - surely thats just teh largest you are allowed under class rules...maybe something smaller/ flatter could be faster around a variable course!

Hi Russ
Yes I do have an email address but if I put it on here I stand a good chance of picking up spam. You can send me a message if you click on my name in the left hand column and the click on send a private message. We can take it from there.

The answer to your question is that you cannot sail windward/leeward in a 505 - the course are not optional. We are always interested in adapting the event to suit the classes so it would be worthwhile you conducting your survey and feeding us the results, which could possibly influence the format for next year. It would be also of interest if other non-asymmetric sailors of the same view also express it by posting your views here. Classes like Fireball, Merlin Rocket, Javelin, 470, are also on the trapezoidal course and might have a different point of view.
Anyway I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers
Bob

The RS100 rates at 1005 for the rig I sail, this is outside the parameters of your asymmetric fleet; but like Russ above, I've no interest in travelling for a trapezoid course.

Hi James,
We had picked up on the issue of slower asymmetrics and a revised NOR is soon to be published.
Watch this space.
Cheers
