No before you ask it was NOT impregnating my misses again, or pulling a sultry sexy face for Fotoboat.  I sold my 300 and bought (Ducks for cover) a Solo!  The logic was simple: New baby on the way meant i couldn't do any of the opens really, growing solo fleet on the river meant close fleet racing!  But now only one month after buying the Solo i want it gone!

So this leads me on to the thread, what was your greatest ever boat blunder?

EDIT:to save my mariage if the wife read my ealier typo!

2008 I bought an RS800 with a friend....BIG Mistake. We lived absolutely
miles away so didn't really get any time to practice, so naturally did
absolutely shocking at any events. Spent half the year messing about
with rig settings then after the nationals agreed No More!

The cutting bit was in space of owning the boat for less than a year, we
lost about £1600 each as the market fell out for a while as we came to
sell.

It's singlehanders for me and nothing else!!

Russ, what's wrong with the solo?? I quite like the look of them and
actually disappointed I'm not heavy enough.

My biggest boat-buying mistake was my first one, my (non-sailing) Dad's friend was selling an OK and my Dad reasoned that it was better to buy from someone he knew than from a stranger. Fair enough but there were no other OK's at the club, and I was 13 years old and about 9 stone wet through at the time! At least it got me used to sailing overpowered boats...

They're an irritating breed!

Surely then, the solo fleet NEEDS YOU to put some ego's in place and to
help them realise that if they want the win they'll have to earn it, not
simply cry and stomp their feet and demand it.

This is your time to help SAVE THE WOOORRRRRRLLD!! Ok maybe a little
overkill but I can't help thinking a regular weekendly dose of ass-
whooping would do these boys some good. I'll assume that after the
300, you have a substantial boat handling advantage when the breeze
kicks in?

I bought a Mirror as an abandoned boat, sold it on ebay ok for profit but not sure it went back on the water, was sold to Pringle of Scotland for a shop display.

Was ok but it meant my dad having to shift his convertible out the garage, lost points there!

A long long time ago I purchased my first boat a Cherub. A lovely looking boat, but something always looked not quite right, but we could never work it out.

At the end of the season the boat came home for a repaint. We needed to turn it over and it seemed easier for the two of us to up end it on it's transom..

When it was resting square on it's transom we realised the bow of the boat was pointing towards next door!

Boat was quickly moved on and a valuable lesson learned to always check the symmetry of a boat.

So if anyone out there has a classic Caisley Steele 111 design Cherub from the 70's just check if the transom is 90 degrees to the centre line!!!

Gotta say looking back I don't regret any of my purchases. The 600 was hated untill I actually got anywhere with it. The national 12 tought me to sail with some finesse and not like a rugby player. Proberbly shoulda woulda coulda but I had fun sailing all of my boats which is the important bit.

Bigest ever boat blunder to date...launcing when it was clearly far to windy at the Abersoch 600 nationals and almost writing her off...

Never found a boat yet that's 100% symmetrical... Although I've heard that new 49ers are coming off new tooling which is as close as they could get...

Tha transom is the least of your worries in that respect, I can't imagine it makes much difference at all. The relationship between the foils, shroud base mast position etc is the really crucial bit, plus of course all that being in line with what the majority of the hull structure is doing.

On the main topic, I think I'd give the Solo racing a bit longer than a month before I really panicked...
